Maximum salary for Police Communications Specialist (Dispatcher) is based on education, prior police dispatcher (911) experience, and longevity within the agency. The Police Communications Specialist (Dispatcher) is a non-sworn position within the Town of Manalapan Police Department. Under the guidance and direction of the Support Lieutenant and Chief of Police.
Job SummaryThe Police Communication Specialist (Dispatcher) receives and dispatches emergency and non-emergency calls for a variety of Town services. Must be able to perform a variety of routine and complex assignments in the communication center. The three main areas of this position are call taker, dispatcher, and teletype operator. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Communications Supervisor. Employees in this position are to be able to perform all work tasks assigned under limited supervision in emergency situations.
The position is required to work weekends and nights (shift work).
Job Duties
- Operate radio equipment in accordance with FCC guidelines.
- Complete and pass the police department’s Field Training Program in the communication center.
- Carry out the duties in accordance with the Federal, State, and County laws, in addition to Town Ordinances.
- Must be able to adhere to the police department’s general orders and Town Policy.
- Monitor radio traffic of all channels and respond to radio calls and maintain awareness of activities.
- Operate all Criminal Justice databases – NCIC, FCIC, PALMS, and CJNet to conduct requested data inquiries in accordance with FDLE and FBI guidelines.
- Maintain confidentiality of criminal history and other information in accordance with Florida State Statues, FBI Policy, and Town of Manalapan Departmental Guidelines.
- Operates computer-aided dispatch (CAD) equipment and multiple computer systems.
- Monitor Town camera system and update officers and dispatch police to service calls.
- Receives 911 calls and determines location and nature of the call and dispatch appropriate personnel.
- Receives and transmits messages by radio and maintain accurate radio logs and records.
- Monitor additional radio channels as needed.
- Operates additional computer terminals/monitors for various federal, state and local networks.
- Exercise general assistance to the public, police officers and command staff during assigned shift.
- Attend department training.

Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to type 35 words per minute
• Prior Dispatch/911 experience preferred but not required
• Must be a U.S. Citizen (born or naturalized).
• No conviction of felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or domestic violence.
• No convictions for criminal traffic offenses (DUI, Reckless driving) within five years of the date of application.
• Applicants must possess before the date of employment a valid State of Florida Driver's License with no more than three (3) moving violations(s) or three (3) at-fault accidents within the most recent three-year period.
Punctuality and regular attendance are essential working mandatory shift hours, including days, nights, holidays, weekends, unscheduled overtime as needed and periodic call outs for both work-related and emergency-preparedness situations.
