Controller, Finance & Banking, Accounting Manager

The Controller will be a hands-on financial leader responsible for overseeing and rebuilding the accounting and finance function of a growing construction company. This role requires deep construction accounting expertise, strong leadership, and the ability to design, implement, and manage financial systems, controls, and processes in a subcontractor-heavy environment with approximately 70 employees.

The Controller will manage day-to-day accounting operations while revamping the finance department, mentoring an existing accounting employee, and establishing scalable processes to support continued growth.

• Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, job cost accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial reporting
• Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Ensure proper job cost tracking, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, and revenue recognition
• Monitor project profitability and provide actionable financial insights to management
• Develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections

• Manage accounting for a high volume of subcontractors, including lien releases, insurance certificates, and compliance documentation
• Oversee subcontractor payments, retainage, and pay applications
• Ensure compliance with contract terms, bonding requirements, and change orders
• Support project managers with cost controls and project-level financial reporting

• Assess current accounting processes and redesign workflows for efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
• Implement and strengthen internal controls, policies, and procedures
• Evaluate and optimize accounting systems and software (job costing, payroll, AP/AR, reporting)
• Build a strong financial foundation to support growth and future hiring

• Supervise, train, and mentor the existing accounting employee
• Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations
• Recommend future staffing needs as the company continues to grow

• Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal and Florida state regulations
• Coordinate with external CPAs for tax preparation, audits, and year-end reporting
• Oversee sales tax, payroll tax, and other regulatory filings
• Support insurance audits, bonding requirements, and lender reporting

• Partner with ownership and leadership to support strategic decision-making
• Provide financial analysis for new projects, pricing strategies, and growth initiatives
• Improve visibility into financial performance across the organization

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 5+ years of accounting experience in the construction industry
• Strong knowledge of job cost accounting and WIP reporting
• Experience managing subcontractor-heavy environments
• Hands-on experience with accounting system implementation or process redesign
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills

• CPA or CMA designation
• Experience working in a growing or transitioning organization
