Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements is an Ameri Corps Program which provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural and cultural resources. Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS) is the nation’s largest national seashore. GUIS stretches for 160 miles from Mississippi to Florida and protects and interprets an interconnected system of coastal defense fortifications, barrier islands, wilderness, and coastal and marine natural areas.
The Resource Education team engages visitors through educational, inspirational, and relevant experiences. The team provides interpretation and education services and products that encourage stewardship, enable renewal and recreation, and conserve and protect Gulf Islands’ natural and cultural resources.
The America 250 Youth Ambassador is an Ameri Corps position which will serve as a member of the park’s Resource Education team to provide interpretation and education services to visitors. The Ameri Corps member will assist park staff in fostering meaningful connections to Gulf Islands National Seashore and its rich history. During the course of the internship, members will serve alongside experienced National Park Service employees supporting every facet of park operations such as formal public programming, informal interpretation services, educational programming, visitor experiences, community engagement, and digital interpretation.

As an Ameri Corps Member serving with the Gulf Islands National Seashore
in
Gulf Breeze, FL, your
responsibilities will include:
- Provide guided talks and tours to facilitate opportunities for visitors to learn about the significance and meaning of the park’s historical and cultural resources with an emphasis on the American Revolution era and the nation’s 250th anniversary of American independence.
- Participate in and support offsite opportunities to connect audiences to the park’s historical and cultural resources.
- Support the park’s America
250 celebration plan. - Provide immersive interpretive and educational experiences through living history, fishing, and/or kayaking activities.
- Assist in researching and creating digital interpretive and educational content for virtual audiences to the park website and social media channels.
- Plan and support video or live-streaming initiatives highlighting under-told park stories, people, and places.
- Provide in-person information and orientation in the park, reply to visitor communications, manage visitation statistics, and support cooperating association operations.
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
- Between the ages of 18 – 30, or up to age 35 with Veteran status.
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an Ameri Corps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
- Must have a valid Driver’s License.
- Bachelor’s degree with courses related to United States history, natural area sciences, communications, parks and recreation, or education.
- Ability to serve independently, as part of a team, and accept supervision.
