Adjunct Faculty - Surgical Technology Practicum I

Rasmussen University

This course is designed to provide students with a clinical experience that includes a solid introduction to the operating room and to scrub and circulating routines. The course expands and applies knowledge gained in the Surgical Procedures courses. One assumption of this curriculum is that the student who has passed the Clinical Readiness portion of the program will be ready to apply knowledge by scrubbing and circulating in a supervised setting beginning Week 1 of this course.

Reporting Relationships:
Adjunct Faculty will report to an Academic Dean.

Responsibilities
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with students regarding feedback on performance consistently throughout the course and as required by the Faculty Expectations.
  • Be available for students via phone, email, and individual appointments as needed for questions and academic assistance.
  • Respond to Dean/University staff regarding performance, student issues and concerns, or items needed for faculty file/accreditation in a timely manner.
  • Exhibit appropriate behavior, language, professional communication, demeanor and dress at all times.
Key Accountabilities
  • Teaching Effectiveness:
    Professionalism, Use of Technology, and Content Expertise
    • Dynamic, Active Classroom – use effective teaching strategies and multiple teaching techniques; teach and model appropriate learning skills and create an environment conducive to learning.
    • Create high levels of student engagement through activities, community building, and student‑centered learning, including the use of live classroom tools for synchronous sessions.
    • Clarify relevance and connection of class objectives to course performance objectives.
    • Organize classroom and use class time efficiently.
  • Subject Matter Expertise
    • Demonstrate mastery and ability to articulate and relate to students.
    • Play an integral role in development and implementation of curriculum and assessment for the area of expertise.
  • Student and University Support and Professionalism
    • Create a classroom presence in support of students in collaboration with the Dean.
    • Support student success through availability to students in all courses via synchronous or asynchronous communication and meetings.
  • Faculty Meetings and Other Responsibilities
    • Attend events, programmatic meetings, and committee work as agreed upon and/or designated by the Dean.
  • Professional Development
    • Complete a minimum of six (6) Rasmussen Educational Units (REUs) annually or two (2) REUs per quarter for each quarter taught, whichever is less, across Teaching Development and Development in Discipline on an annual basis.
Experience and Qualifications
  • Teaching experience preferred – minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of study.
  • Clinical preceptor experience preferred.
  • Self‑motivated, flexible, and able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with students, leadership, and peers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Education, Certifications and Licenses
  • Associate’s degree in Surgical Technology.
  • Active, unrestricted CST or CST/CSFA. If state license is required, must be unencumbered.
  • 2+ years of experience as an operating‑room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology within the past 5 years.
  • Must provide official transcripts for each degree earned from an accredited institution before teaching.
  • Must provide professional licenses/certifications required for specialized schools (Health Sciences, Nursing) before teaching; license must be active and unencumbered.
  • Clinical faculty must adhere to Rasmussen University’s policy on faculty immunizations and provide proper documentation.
