Overview

The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System's Primary Care Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Primary Care Pain Physician. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program. Excellent communication and teamwork are essential.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

• United States Citizenship:
  Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
• Residency Training:
  Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program (Family Medicine or Internal Medicine) leading to eligibility for board certification
• Approved residencies: (1) ACGME; (2) AOA; or (3) other residencies with a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States, as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis; they are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged
• Additional consideration for surgery residents in gap years may be appointed as PRPs
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Preferred Experience:
  
  Board certified or board eligible in Addiction Medicine (if not, applicant plans to achieve that within the conditional hiring period) and Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
• Alternative pain management skills (such as osteopathic manipulation, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, healing touch); comfortable prescribing buprenorphine; experience with joint injections and trigger point injections
• Fellowship training in Pain Management and Addiction; one-year post-residency in pain management and addiction training

  Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019
• This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health

• Serve as a primary care pain specialist/provider for patients requiring comprehensive pain care management within the assigned clinic structure
• Manage ongoing patient care, including examination, medical care management, coordination of consultations, referrals, and development and operation of quality assurance and utilization programs
• Coordinate comprehensive pain management care needs according to Department of Veterans Affairs guidelines and sound medical practice
• Refer to management of clinical concerns found during evaluations
• Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to provide timely, high-quality, coordinated care for Veterans
• Work with other facility departments and staff on projects pertaining to the delivery of comprehensive pain management
• May function as collaborating physician for inpatient and outpatient pain management coordinating for postoperative and inpatients
• Provide consultation services to address opioid addiction issues for patients without comorbid substance abuse or active mental health issues
• Work Schedule:
  
  Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm (schedules approved by supervisor); may be required to work various shifts based on facility/patient care needs
