Job Specifications

The City of Tallahassee is seeking qualified applicants to fill either an Accountant or Senior Accountant position within the Financial Services Department. Applicants will be considered for the level that aligns with their education, experience, and professional certifications.

These positions are part of the City’s core accounting and financial reporting team, responsible for maintaining the organization’s financial records in accordance with governmental accounting standards, playing a vital part in maintaining the City’s strong financial foundation. The successful candidates for these roles will be responsible for citywide governmental fund accounting, financial reporting and statement preparation, regulatory compliance, and external audit coordination.

What

You’ll Do Accountant
  • Perform moderately complex governmental and fund accounting work in alignment with GAAP and GAAFR standards.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Analyze financial data to identify discrepancies and apply appropriate corrective action.
  • Support accounting system operations, including modules, integrations, and financial applications.
  • Assist with internal/external audits, monthly and quarterly reporting, regulatory submissions, and compliance documentation.
  • Help support grants and project accounting by reviewing transactions, monitoring revenues, and preparing required schedules.
  • Work independently on assigned projects, with work reviewed through audits, reporting outcomes, and internal checks.
  • These duties require skill in financial analysis, strong attention to detail, familiarity with governmental fund accounting, and the ability to maintain accurate and complete financial records.
Senior Accountant (Advanced-Level Role)
  • Lead complex governmental and fund accounting activities, applying advanced knowledge of GAAP, GAAFR, and governmental reporting standards.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze complex financial statements, reconciliations, schedules, and specialized accounting reports.
  • Research, interpret, and resolve advanced accounting issues or reporting requirements across funds, projects, and grants.
  • Support major reporting cycles such as the ACFR, Single Audit, SEFSA, and other financial disclosures.
  • Review contracts, grants, and project structures to ensure accurate financial system setup and compliance with federal and state rules.
  • Serve as a technical resource to departments, providing guidance on accounting policies, business processes, and financial system functionality.
  • Provide leadership support and may supervise or assist in training lower-level accounting or administrative staff.
  • Operate independently with minimal guidance under the general direction of a supervisor or manager.
