Senior Director, Field Medical Affairs - COVID/Virology

The Senior Director, Field Medical Affairs in COVID‑19/Virology is responsible for providing leadership, oversight, and overall direction to a group of U.S. Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs). They oversee the MSL team in cultivating Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and emerging thought leaders in academic and clinical medicine at national and regional levels. The role supports the design and execution of strategic therapeutic area plans under the guidance of the VP of U.S. Medical Affairs, in close collaboration with the Senior Director, COVID‑19/Virology Medical Lead and cross‑functional partners.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and inspire a team of high‑performing MSLs by fostering development, managing performance, and guiding strategic execution.
  • Directly lead a small team of MSLs while supervising a Director of Field Medical Affairs who manages a larger group.
  • Partner with recruiters, training, and operational colleagues to devise recruitment strategies and build high‑performing MSL teams.
  • Develop and implement strategic medical affairs field‑based plans for Shionogi’s marketed and pipeline COVID‑19/Virology products and disease states; oversee execution and manage associated budget.
  • Maintain organizational infrastructure with appropriate geographical distribution, ensure robust training and monitor performance.
  • Collaborate with the Field Medical Affairs Trainer to assess training needs and drive team development initiatives.
  • Lead the identification of and interactions with KOLs in designated disease areas and geography at national, regional, and local levels.
  • Oversee scientific exchange with the external HCP community through balanced communication of medical and scientific information.
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs colleagues to execute therapeutic area strategy with appropriate use of resources.
  • Gather customer insights and provide feedback to internal stakeholders for continual improvements.
  • Ensure compliant and appropriate practices in all HCP interactions.
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders and lead Medical Affairs cross‑functional teams as needed.
  • Drive and facilitate expansion of research, advisory, and educational opportunities with external stakeholders.
  • Ensure appropriate representation of medical and scientific information in advisory boards, payer presentations, and other settings.
  • Serve on Medical Affairs and Commercial advisory boards and cross‑functional teams.
  • Direct field‑based Medical Affairs attendance and coverage at congresses and meetings, including post‑conference reporting.
  • Monitor competitive environment to sustain therapeutic area expertise.
  • Maintain policies and processes guiding daily operations of the field team.
  • Ensure compliance with communication and field activity policies, corporate policies, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a life sciences program with strong knowledge of science and healthcare.
  • Minimum 12 years in the pharmaceutical industry, including 5+ years in Field Medical Affairs as an MSL and 3+ years in Anti‑infectives, Virology, and/or Vaccines; 2+ years as a team lead.
  • Proven experience building, leading and motivating national MSL teams.
  • Experience developing and executing strategic plans for the MSL team and aligning field activities with the broader organization.
  • Ability to lead and inspire MSL teams, set clear goals, and foster a collaborative environment.
  • Understanding of industry regulations and compliance standards.
  • Experience in Medical Affairs operations with an emphasis on field‑based teams.
  • Mentoring, career development guidance, and professional growth nurturing.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and latest medical advancements.
  • Proficiency in interpreting clinical data, scientific literature, and market insights.
  • Understanding of pharmaceutical business principles and contribution to strategic discussions.
  • Extensive experience in U.S. pre‑launch and launch activities strongly preferred.
