Sumter Utilities, Inc. (a Quanta Services company) seeks a commercial vehicle technician to work in the Florence, SC to Charleston, SC region/area. The successful candidate will possess demonstrated experience in mechanical support of a Commercial or Military Fleet, with preference given to experience maintaining & repairing construction-type vehicles/equipment.

Basic Requirements
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Diesel/Auto Certification from a Technical/Vocational/Military program – or any combination of education & experience providing equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Ability & willingness, without special arrangements, to travel away from home on short notice in support of Field Operations
  • Prior ASE Medium‑Heavy Truck Certification (Tests T1‑T8) is preferred but not required
  • Active employees may be offered the opportunity to obtain ASE Certification and will be required to maintain certification in CPR, First Aid and Forklift Operation
Duties/Responsibilities (Subject to but not limited to)
  • Maintenance and Repairs
    • Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems and related components, including transmission, exhaust, brakes, and fuel systems.
    • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
    • Repair or replace malfunctioning parts, such as belts, hoses, pumps, and injectors.
    • Repair booms consistent with bucket and digger trucks.
    • Repair trailers, pulling equipment, tracked equipment (various) and other equipment utilized to build the power grid.
  • Troubleshooting
    • Identify mechanical problems through diagnostic tests and visual inspections.
    • Troubleshoot issues with engines, electrical systems, air conditioning, and other mechanical systems in diesel‑powered vehicles or equipment.
    • Troubleshoot booms with hydraulic systems, electrical components and within the work environment of Mother Nature.
  • Preventative Maintenance
    • Conduct regular preventative maintenance to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of diesel engines and machinery.
    • Document proper records of maintenance schedules and repairs performed.
    • Perform preventative maintenance on all equipment (tracked and wheeled) that includes company‑issued service truck.
  • Parts Management
    • Order and maintain inventory of necessary parts for equipment assigned on service requests.
    • Ensure that all repairs and replacements use high‑quality, durable parts; return any core charges to vendors.
  • Customer Service
    • Work closely with Equipment Service Coordinators to ensure status of equipment when assigned to make repairs.
    • Report any emergencies such as a man stuck in a bucket or fluid spills to your supervisor and fleet management.
    • Communicate with customers (internal crews) to explain necessary repairs or services.
    • Provide accurate timelines for repairs and prior approval for maintenance costs.
  • Safety and Compliance
    • Follow all safety guidelines, procedures, and regulations when working with tools and equipment.
    • Follow FMCSA regulations while driving and repairing equipment.
    • Complete JTSA for the day and, if on job site, review and sign off on JTSA with crew.
    • Ensure that all repairs meet industry standards and comply with environmental regulations.
  • Documentation and Reporting
    • Keep accurate records of services performed, parts used, and work completed. Records are kept in the software system (Mobile Frame).
    • Maintain clear documentation for any work performed, including warranty work or manufacturer recommendations.
    • Perform and document pre‑ and post‑trip reports.
