Overview
Performs duties as a certified inspector and maintains certification in two specialized areas, which may include Asphalt Roadway Technician, SCDOT Earthwork, Drainage and Base Inspector, SCDOT Concrete Field Technician, SCDOT Pavement Preservation Level 1, and/or Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Inspector.
Assists certified construction inspectors with inspecting daily work performed by contractors on highway and bridge construction projects, including but not limited to asphalt and concrete paving, earthwork and base construction, concrete structures, and erosion control and prevention. Ensures all contract pay items are installed in accordance with the Contract Special Provisions, Plans, and Standard Specifications. Notifies the contractor and direct supervisor or the RCE of any issues on the project site and ensures conflicts are resolved appropriately.
Maintains open communication with the direct supervisor regarding day-to-day project operations. Assists in monitoring work zones on assigned projects to ensure traffic control devices are placed according to SCDOT requirements, identifies any deficiencies or safety issues, and ensures they are corrected immediately.
- Accurately measures, calculates, and records quantities of installed contract pay items in the field, and enters the information into Project Wise daily work reports for accurate contractor payment.
- Thoroughly documents daily construction activities and field measurements on standard electronic inspection forms. Submits all documentation and reports daily.
- Assists certified construction inspectors with inspecting daily work performed by contractors on highway and bridge construction projects, including but not limited to asphalt and concrete paving, earthwork and base construction, concrete structures, and erosion control and prevention.

- Enters sampling data into Sample Logs, Project Wise, and tracks samples until results are received.
- Prepares all required construction reports, including wage interviews and any forms associated with Federal Projects.
- Assists with emergency and hazardous weather operations, may involve extended hour and/or 12 hour shifts.

A high school diploma and two (2) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
