Pinal County is hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee and Operator in the Public Works Department. The role focuses on road maintenance, equipment operation, safety compliance, and project support.

Job Summary – Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee

Type – Trainee;
Pay Grade 05;
Starting Salary $34,500.00. This is an entry‑level position that can transfer into the Heavy Equipment Operator series once certifications and training are completed.

Job Summary – Heavy Equipment Operator

Type – Operator;
Pay Grade 07;
Starting Salary $39,411.00. The Operator performs skilled tasks, operates a variety of heavy equipment, and follows safety regulations under basic supervision.

Essential Duties – Trainee
  • Operate specialized equipment to maintain roads, drainage, and infrastructure.
  • Use light trucks, water trucks, mowers, loaders, and back hoes.
  • Perform manual labor: repair potholes, clear debris, move barricades.
  • Maintain daily logs, reports, and maintenance records.
  • Follow safety rules, report hazards, and perform emergency tasks.
  • Work on projects and make decisions based on experience.
  • Promote teamwork, confidentiality, and accountability.
Essential Duties – Operator
  • Operate heavy equipment (dozer, grader, dump) to maintain roads and infrastructure.
  • Control pavement work: asphalt spread, crack seal, pothole repair.
  • Haul materials, transport equipment, and manage project safety.
  • Maintain logs, reports, and perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Follow safety regulations, report hazards, and perform emergency tasks.
  • Work independently on projects and make decisions based on experience.
  • Promote teamwork, confidentiality, and accountability.
Minimum Requirements – Trainee
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
  • Class A Arizona State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsements within the first 5 months.
Minimum Requirements – Operator
  • Three (3) years of construction or maintenance equipment experience, or one (1) year as a County Operator trainee.
  • Class A CDL with tanker endorsements within the first 5 months.
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One (1) year of construction, maintenance, or related equipment experience.
  • CPR/First Aid Certified.
  • Special Requirements:
    Trainees must obtain a Class A CDL Learner’s Permit within the first 90 days to obtain Class A CDL with tanker endorsements within the first 5 months.
