Application Tips
Position Responsibilities- Provide attorney support and guidance in mitigation, treatment, rehabilitation, and sentencing/disposition alternatives, including individualized plans for clients.
- Assist attorneys in developing defense strategies for clients.
- Interview clients, families, and interested parties to develop treatment/sentencing plans.
- Establish rapport with clients, family, and witnesses in a culturally competent manner to overcome barriers to disclosure of sensitive information.
- Identify, obtain, and analyze anecdotal and documentary evidence relevant to life history and development.
- Assess clients and witnesses for mental health, and describe mental health symptomatology.
- Conduct assessments of juveniles and adults related to mental health, trauma, substance use, and related patterns.
- Make recommendations regarding treatment and disposition.
- Identify appropriate alternatives to incarceration.
- P resent and/or submit reports to the Court under supervising attorney when requested.
- Locate residential and outpatient treatment resources for clients.
- Network with individuals and community agencies to access social, educational, and employment resources.
- Assist clients with reintegration into the community.
- Promote workplace values of accountability, commitment, and teamwork.
- Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and county information.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Behavioral Science, Social Science or closely related field.
- Three (3) years of professional casework experience within a criminal justice, social service, or court agency.
- Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.
- Prior adult and/or juvenile indigent defense mitigation experience.

- Ability to work with traumatic subject matter (crime scenes and accidents).
- Ability to handle interruptions, time pressure, and high volumes of work.
- Ability to manage multiple or complicated tasks and changing priorities.
- Strong accuracy, decision making, and concentration.
- Ability to work with a team and with the public.
- Ability to summarize facts and details clearly and concisely.
The work requires mobility to stand, walk, bend, and sit for prolonged periods; dexterity to reach, grasp, and use a computer keyboard; vision to read; and hearing and speaking to communicate with customers in person and over the phone.
