Position: Volunteer - Citizens on Patrol, Sheriff's Office

Overview

This is a non-compensated, volunteer position within the Pinal County Sheriff's Office. The volunteer performs citizen patrols in a marked vehicle of minimal to moderate difficulty to support law enforcement with skilled observation practices, record keeping methods and transfer of information. The volunteer applies knowledge of established policies and procedures. No deviation from standard, established procedures, processes or protocol will be allowed.

Decisions made by the volunteer affect the work of the department. The volunteer is under the supervision of the COP Unit Manager, COP Program Director and PCSO area commander.

This is a voluntary, unpaid position not covered under the Pinal County Merit System. Minimum commitment requirement is 16 hours per month for 1 year. Incumbents in this position serve at the pleasure of their respective Appointing Authority. The employment relationship of incumbents in this position is at will; the employee may be terminated at any time, for any reason, with or without cause.

Tentative COP Academy dates: January 2026 (must submit application by December 1st);
September 2026 (must submit application by August 1st). If qualified, eligible applicants will be notified via email regarding next steps. All dates are tentative and subject to change.

Essential functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Active neighborhood patrols.
  • Patrol as a one or two-person unit as assigned.
  • Provide traffic control as necessary.
  • Transport victims, witnesses, or citizens as needed.
  • Assist in Agency Response and large-scale emergency or disaster situations as requested.
  • Creating visible presence to deter crime.
  • Observation, recording and reporting suspicious activities.
  • Assuring personal and public safety at all times.
  • Maintaining monthly online time records.
  • Participation in fairs, educational opportunities, community events, fundraisers, public relations, recruitment efforts and partnerships with other agencies as approved.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information; performs related duties as required or assigned.
  • High School Diploma or GED; must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age, a United States citizen or legal resident.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.
  • Must have transportation to and from the post of duty.
  • Must possess proof of current auto insurance, at all times.
  • Must successfully pass and complete background examination, as well as a Truth Verification technology.
  • Must complete oral interviews.
  • Must submit certified driving record.
  • Must complete COP Academy.
