Job Summary

Maintain safety and security of inmates, staff and detention facilities; provide custody and control of inmates; preserve order and discipline; and supervise inmates according to Pinal County Sheriff's Office Adult Detention Center (PCSO-ADC) policies and procedures and state and Federal regulations under basic supervision. This is an Entry/Trainee position, which works under close supervision.

Detention Cadet Hiring Process
  • Testing typically occurs every other month.
  • Test day involves a physical agility test, a written test, and a preliminary background review.
Documents Required for Testing
  • Birth Certificate, Naturalization Papers (original) or Current Passport
  • High School Diploma, GED, or transcript with graduation date (original) or higher education certificates/diplomas
  • Arizona Driver’s License (original)
  • Social Security Card (original)
  • Credit Report (original) – a complete report is required on a thumb drive (only score will not be accepted)
  • DD‑214 or Selective Service Registration (original) if discharged from military
  • Vehicle Insurance Card
  • Certified Driving History Record for 3 years (original)
Physical Agility Assessment
  • Push‑ups (untimed): 15 or more
  • Sit‑ups (1 minute): 19 or more
  • 300‑meter run: 75 seconds or better
  • 1.5‑mile run: 17:40 or better
Testing Components
  • Written Test – essay‑style, 60 minutes, 3 questions, 70 % passing.
  • Preliminary Background Review – questionnaire and document verification.
  • ESOPH Background – upload additional documents within seven days.
  • Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) – scheduled after background review.
  • Command Review and Interview – conditional offer pending approvals.
  • Official Offer – upon successful completion of all steps.
Application Guidelines
  • Applicants will not receive copies of their test results.
  • No documents submitted will be returned.
  • Applicants will not be advised of reasons for non‑selection.
Drug Use
  • Marijuana – each position reviewed case‑by‑case; less than six months acceptable.
  • Dangerous drugs / narcotics / hallucinogens / vaporous substances – any use within the past five years.
  • Peyote / mescaline – illegal use except for bona fide religious ceremonies.
  • Recent patterns of abuse of any drugs may lead to disqualification.
Theft or Misappropriation of Property
  • Habitual theft pattern or theft while in a position of trust.
Felony or Domestic Violence Convictions
  • Any conviction for a felony in the State of Arizona, at any time.
Fraud or Misrepresentation
  • Intentional deception or fraud in the application or testing process.
Driving Record
  • Recent pattern of excessive traffic violations (positions requiring a motor vehicle).
Previous Positions Held
  • Disciplinary actions for abuse of leave, gross insubordination, dereliction of duty, or persistent policy violations.
  • Involuntary dismissal from two or more employers as an adult (excluding layoff).
  • More than seven paid positions with different employers in the past four years, or more than fifteen in the past ten years (exceptions for students and others with valid explanations).
  • Resignation without notice (unless justified by a hostile work environment or other reasonable cause).
Military Service
  • Separation must be classified as “Honorable”, “General under Honorable conditions”, or “Uncharacterized”.
Typical Classification Essential Duties
  • Maintain custody and control of inmates; use sound judgment in decision‑making.
  • Ensure safety and security of staff, inmates, and facilities; monitor inmate behavior.
  • Supervise inmate activities, maintain discipline, and intervene to avert fights, assaults, riots, and escapes.
  • Provide equal protection and care for all inmates (nutrition, hygiene, education, transport, recreation, laundry, clothing, housing, medical assistance).
  • Monitor for rule violations; de‑escalate violent situations; maintain appropriate use of force.
  • Perform inspections, security checks, head counts, area searches; ensure areas are safe, sanitary, and free of contraband.
