The role of Welding Process Engineer is to support the welding and manufacturing activities in processing materials or manufacturing products in an industrial large diameter spiral weld pipe and steel fabrication organization by performing the following duties personally or with manufacturing personnel in a combined team approach. This position will be a member of the Great Lakes Operation Team and will be permanently located in Flint, MI, but may involve occasional travel to other plant locations in Columbia, SC, Houston, TX or Paris, TX.
Responsibilities- Assist department managers with defining best welding practices, including researching and evaluating associated equipment.
- Assist in developing and training best welding practices on the weld equipment.
- Assist in all welding activities, including but not limited to, developing best practices for cutting, fitting, and welding techniques and researching and evaluating associated equipment for capital procurement to achieve best in class steel fabrication.
- Assist in troubleshooting welding problems and other technical problems in the manufacturing process, as well as developing new procedures and techniques to improve welding quality and speed.
- Review specification boundaries with department leaders to ascertain product welding requirements and ensure weld processes are created and approved to meet the defined requirements.
- Monitor and assist with welding related processes to ensure production and quality of products meet specifications.
- Monitor welding machines and equipment to ensure specific and maximum operational performance, as well as optimum utilization.
- Support welding operators as needed to ensure adequate quality, productivity and knowledge.
- Develop or revise standard welding practices and observe welders to ensure compliance with standards.
- Resolve welding issues independently or as part of a team to improve processes or bring processes into compliance with governing codes, standards and specifications.
- Compile, store, retrieve and analyze appropriate welding data.
- Work with Quality Assurance and production to develop and/or revise weld procedures.
- Work with Quality Assurance and production to develop and maintain the usage/revision of weld procedures.
- Work with Plant Maintenance personnel to understand PLC programming as it pertains to welding engineering and participate in the maintenance and development of all weld-related PLC code.
- Work with Division Engineering to ensure compliance with Division Engineering standards.
- Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Must be able to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Must be able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
- Must be able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Must be able to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Must be able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Must be able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Must have the ability to apply welding theory in practical applications.
- Must have the ability to read, understand and interpret blueprints.
- Must have the ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.
- Familiarity with welding codes preferred: ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, AWS B2.1, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3.
- Knowledge of manufacturing software; spreadsheet software and word processing software, design software including AutoCAD® and SOLIDWORKS® preferred.
- Knowledge of welding processes; experience as a welder or desire to gain experience as a welder preferred.
- The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and talk or hear.
- The employee is frequently required to stand and walk.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
