The Speech-Language Pathologist will provide diagnostic assessment of children who are referred for speech-language evaluations by performing screenings, assessing patient condition, designing therapy/treatment plans to help the patient develop necessary speech skills. The Speech-Language Pathologist should be able to alter therapy/treatment to better suit the individual needs of a diverse patient population. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, will collaborate with other departments and community agencies.

ESSENTIAL

JOB FUNCTIONS

Prepare case history by performing chart reviews and interviewing parent(s) and children.

Administer, score and interpret diagnostic tests.

Prepare reports of child's evaluation results and interpretation.

Select and implement appropriate therapy technique consistent with physician’s orders and professional assessment of client’s needs.

Develop treatment plans to assist patients with communications and swallowing disorders.

Assess client’s needs and adjust treatments in accordance with patient progression.

Counsel children and their parents/guardians regarding the social, developmental and psychological problems associated with speech and language disabilities.

Consult with audiologists, physicians, social workers, teachers and other professionals, and makes appropriate referrals.

Serve on multidisciplinary team and provides support to the various Health Center programs and projects.

Identify gaps in county regarding speech pathology services and makes program recommendations to Administrative Manager, Rehab.

Prepare accurate documentation in accordance with state guidelines and clinic policy.

Teach client’s proper techniques for achieving more effective communication.

Perform administrative duties, including case management activity and treatment planning.

Participate in coordination of care meetings/communication with MCHC PT/OT/SLP providers and/or other PT/OT/SLP facilities.

Perform chart reviews and quarterly audits.

Other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Master’s degree in Speech Language Therapy/Communication Disorders from an accredited program that meets ASHA certification requirements is required.

Must have an active Speech Language Pathology license with the State of Michigan, in good standing.

Requires an active Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) through ASHA.

Prefer a minimum of three (3) years of SLP clinical experience in pediatrics, or clinical experience in a pediatric setting.

CPR certification required.

Experience developing and implementing speech-language treatment programs.

Strong understanding of speech-related conditions, causes and treatments.

Proficiency with computers, especially patient and healthcare databases.

Excellent coaching and verbal/written communication skills.

Must possess strong interpersonal skills for interaction with children, family and team members.

Basic computer skills required with:
Microsoft Outlook, Access, Adobe Acrobat.

Intermediate computer skills required with:
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and EHR/EMR/EPM.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is primarily performed in an office or school environment with no unusual discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, or exposure to hazardous materials.

Regularly experiences (more than 80% of time) mental/visual fatigue.

Risk Category A - Job functions involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
