London Underground Fleet Engineering – Level 3 Apprentice Standard:
Rail Engineering Technician

Job Overview

Our Fleet Engineers at London Underground play a vital role in maintaining and upgrading the operational efficiency and safety of our rolling stock. As a Fleet Engineer, your responsibility is crucial in maintaining our entire fleet of trains. You will be up to date with the latest developments, ensuring our assets, both new and legacy, consistently operate at optimal levels. This role is pivotal in the continuous performance and safety of our transportation system.

What

will I be doing?

During your apprenticeship, you will undergo a three-year development program consisting of up to seven placement rotations across London. Our goal is to provide you with a diverse set of skills and experiences essential for a successful career. Recognising that each person's career path is distinct, we tailor every apprentice's journey to be unique. Here is a glimpse of what your journey might entail:

  • Year 1 – You will acclimate to London Underground and engineering. This period involves exploring fundamental engineering theories at our partner college in Enfield, followed by comprehensive training, including track safety protocols, enabling you to operate confidently around our fleet in various depots.

  • Year 2 – Engage in the operational side of the business, gaining practical insights from experienced train maintainers across different lines. You will shadow teams, rotate across depots, and continue building on engineering principles at the partner college in Enfield. You will develop proficiency in mechanical, electrical, and hand tool usage, working with your assessor on a range of knowledge questions integral to your qualifications.

  • Year 3 – Continue rotating through placements, honing competencies through diverse methods. Qualifications include knowledge assessments and documenting practical work. You will present your best work to an external engineering institute to obtain the final endorsement as a proficient rolling stock engineer, enabling you to work as a train maintainer in depots.

  • Where can this career take me?
    • Upon successful completion, you could move into a Train Maintainer position, with opportunities for Advanced Train Maintainer or Manager roles.
    • At the end of the apprenticeship, you will reach an Engineering Technician professional standard. There is potential to pursue Engineering Chartership in the future.
    • You’ll have opportunities to complete additional training courses, including soft skills, safety, and technical skills training.
    Sustainability

Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s ethos. You will have placements that help deliver our Green strategy and ensure TfL is a strong, green part of London.

What training and support will you get?

You will work toward a Level 3 qualification in Railway Engineering Technician (Rolling stock). Typically, you will attend CONEL college in Enfield for block placements to complete 4 Mandatory Units that form your Level 3 Knowledge qualification; the remaining 3 units will be delivered by your Assessor. We will support your technical development through a mix of on-the-job experiences, classroom and online training, mentoring opportunities, and structured networking.

You will receive one-to-one support from your scheme sponsor and Line Manager, and be connected to a buddy who is an experienced apprentice.

    What do we look for?

Our core values are important to us, and we seek candidates who are:

    • Caring about colleagues, customers, and work
    • Open to ideas and collaboration
    • Adaptable to diverse needs and willing to innovate
