Overview
Are you ready to make a difference in your local community? The City of Flagstaff is hiring two Mechanic I and one Mechanic Assistant – Lube Technician. These roles support the city’s fleet of light and heavy vehicles, perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on gasoline and diesel‑powered vehicles, and deliver excellent customer service.
Responsibilities- Provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
- Performs semi‑skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of city vehicles and equipment.
- Conducts preventative maintenance such as lubrication, oil/filter changes, light electrical work and works alongside seasoned mechanics.
- Inspects, maintains, and repairs gasoline‑powered automotive equipment.
- Assists the Mechanic I, Mechanic II and/or Lead worker with assigned tasks.
- Repairs electrical, fuel supply systems, hydraulic systems including master cylinder, proportioning valves, engine cooling systems.
- May assist with heavy equipment repair or routine maintenance.
- Make minor repairs on heavy equipment such as hydraulic hoses, cylinders and broken fittings.
- Replaces wheel cylinders and relines and adjusts brakes.
- Performs lubrication and oil changes on light vehicles and equipment.
- Installs auxiliary equipment, batteries, tires, wiring, door glass, door handles, and brakes.
- Maintains records of repairs, work orders, and time worked.
- Works in the field and in the shop as assigned.
- Performs tire repair work and records and charges out time.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Some work experience or training in automotive/truck repair from a community college, high school or vocational program (plus).
- Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above minimum requirements.
- Trade school certificate related to automotive mechanics.
- ASE certification in gasoline engines and modules A1‑A8.
- ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician.
- Valid Arizona driver’s license.
- Ability to maintain residence within Arizona and arrive at work within one hour of notification.
- Subject to post‑employment and random drug/alcohol screening.
- Provide hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers and socket sets.
- Able to work 12‑hour shifts during emergencies, including weekends and holidays.
- Regular attendance essential.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Three years of experience as a professional mechanic.
- Or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
- Trade school certificate related to automotive mechanics.
- ASE certification in gasoline engines and modules A1‑A8.
- ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician.
- Valid Arizona driver’s license.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of employment.
- CDL Tanker and Hazmat endorsements within 6 months of eligibility.
- Regular attendance essential.
- Residence within Arizona, timely arrival at emergency work sites.
- Pre‑employment drug screening and post‑employment random testing.
- Provide own hand tools.
- Work 12‑hour shifts during emergencies, weekends and holidays.
The Mechanic Assistant – Lube Technician salary ranges from $40,518.40 to $50,648.00 annually, and the Mechanic I salary ranges from $49,608.00 to $62,025.60 annually.
