Overview
Nature of Work:
Under limited supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in maintaining the safety and security of the Courts and court services; performs related work as assigned. Acts as a Certified Court Security Officer.
This position is located in Page, Arizona. The position is an on-call position with hours and days varying based on the court's needs. We will guarantee 16 hours per week. The schedule may include weekdays, weekends, nights, and holidays as needed.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities- Conduct screening of persons, baggage, or containers to ensure compliance with Court Security regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Operate basic security equipment such as x-ray machines and hand wands at court entrances.
- Patrol court facilities and grounds.
- Ensure the safety of those who participate in the judicial process and ensure safe and secure access to justice.
- Address potentially high-risk situations involving the safety of court personnel and the public.
- Provide an armed security presence at the main court entrance conducting an overwatch of entry screening procedures.
- Monitor security systems, including closed circuit video, fire and security alarms; and access control hardware.
- Escort vendors when on premises.
- Answer routine inquiries and direct visitors to appropriate areas.
- Distinguish color and depth perception to conduct personnel and bag screening, including operation of an X-ray scanner and metal detectors.
- Screen mail, including incoming and outgoing packages for suspicious contents.
- Provide close judicial officer protection, including liaison with police regarding threats via correspondence or in person.
- Provide courtroom security, including security sweeps, jury protection, and high-risk trial support.
- Collect and process fingerprints for criminal justice purposes, court employment, and for adoption applicants.
- Ensure the integrity of juries is maintained.
- Handle court documentation, evidence, and exhibits.
- Provide Critical Incident response, including active shooter interdiction.
- Prepare incident reports and daily log entries.
- Prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
- Enforce correction of infractions through verbal warnings, expel unruly persons, and detain more serious offenders for proper authorities.
- Attend Order of Protection and Injunction Against Harassment hearings.
- Respond to assistance calls from courtrooms.
- Qualify with firearms on an annual basis, and with other defensive tactics and/or less-lethal weapons as appropriate to the job assignment.
A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent and three years of recent experience as a police officer, military police officer, or comparable security experience where training, qualifying with and carrying a firearm was required, including recent experience in a position involving significant interaction with the public. Must successfully complete the Arizona Supreme Court's Court Security Officer Training Academy within 90 days of employment and Arizona Supreme Court's Court Security Officer Firearms Training Academy within 180 days of employment pursuant to ARS.
- Applicants must successfully pass a psychological examination.
Must not have any felony conviction(s) within the last 10 years or dishonorable discharge from the military. Must not have any misdemeanor convictions involving domestic violence within the previous five years. This position is safety sensitive. The position is at-will.

- Security techniques and practices associated with government building security issues.
- Principles and practices of security enforcement methods and techniques for providing safety, security and emergency services.
- Procedures for entry and retrieval of security information and methods for correction.
- General knowledge of court terminology, rules, procedures, and operations.

- Interact with people who are often confused, angry, and/or openly hostile, while maintaining proper security and decorum.
- Understand Court procedures and processes.
- Interpret City policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Qualify with firearms and less-lethal weapons, as assigned, on an annual basis.
- Learn and interpret City policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Identify hazardous or unsafe conditions or behaviors.
- Listen, communicate, and work effectively with a diverse group of people.
- Proficiently perform computerized word processing, reading comprehension, summarizing, and writing/editing.
- Attend or conduct various meetings as needed.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, court staff, and the general public.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
- Attend a 40-hour Court Security Officer training course and be certified in accordance with standards set by the Arizona Administrative Office of the Courts.
- Work safely and support a culture of workplace safety.
- Effectively follow directives.
