HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer
Nature of Work
Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in planning and supervising assigned functions; performs technical work of moderate difficulty in maintaining, operating and repairing HVAC and electrical systems; performs related work as assigned.
The ideal candidate will be well versed in supervision practices/procedures, sustainability, BMS and work order programs. Works well with customers and department teams to ensure job expectations are met; shares information on work assignments both verbally and in writing; practices open, honest and fair communication; able to prioritize, organize and maintain records, budget and preventative maintenance schedules.
Typical Duties(Illustrative Only)
- Recruits, supervises, trains, and evaluates, and disciplines staff
- Plans, schedules, and implements assigned projects and daily workload
- Coordinates activities with various agencies, individuals and vendors
- Develops, prepares and maintains records and reports which includes data entry into computerized software program
- Responsible for program budget line items and purchasing
- Researches and implements new products, technology and innovations
- Adjusts priorities and work schedules to accommodate the organizations demands for evolving service delivery needs
- Maintains relationships with outside vendors and internal customers
- Ensures compliance with laws, regulations and policies related to Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Employee Right To Know regulations
- Performs daily computer checks of Building Management System and makes program and field adjustments when necessary
- Analyzes chemical treatment in heating a cooling systems for proper levels and makes adjustments as necessary
- Installs, maintains, repairs and performs system checks on a wide variety of building systems
- Operates a variety of tools and equipment
- Performs inspections according to preventative maintenance schedule, making repairs, upgrades and/or replacements when necessary
- Diagnoses problems with mechanical, energy management and electrical equipment and systems
- Communicates with customers about planned maintenance and repairs as well as system outages
- Performs other duties as assigned
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
Driving; reaching to work on equipment, reaching; working around others; working on ladders, scaffolding and lifts; vision acuity (near) for close detail to work; color vision for equipment wiring, warning lights, and light indicators; hearing to listen to equipment operation; speech for communicating verbally for directions and explanations; finger dexterity for tool use, computer use, and filling out forms. Environmental factors include working inside 70% of the time;
exposure to noise; working with mechanical equipment; mechanical and electrical hazards working with heaters, boilers, A/C units, tools and pumps; burn hazards associated with electricity and gas heat; working in cold and inclement weather and sun exposure.
- Five years HVAC and/or electrical experience in a commercial/industrial setting, including one year of supervisory experience, OR
- Associate degree in a related field and four years of HVAC and/or electrical experience in a commercial/industrial setting, including one year of supervisory experience, OR
- Bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of HVAC and/or electrical experience in a commercial/industrial setting, including one year of supervisory experience, OR
- Any combination of education, training and experience, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Must pass a background check and have a clean driving record. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year motor vehicle report. Must obtain EPA 608 Certification and R410A Safety Training within one year of employment;
First aid/CPR certification;
Lock out/Tag out Certification.
Experience with Distech controls or other Niagara based systems, supervisory experience, project management experience with medium to large scale HVAC projects.
This position is safety sensitive.

- Laws, regulations, and policies governing hiring, supervision, and discipline of County employees
