Nature of Work
Under close supervision and in a training capacity, the Deputy Recruit is responsible for technical work of moderate difficulty in law enforcement or investigative duties and performs related work as assigned. Deputy Recruits work in a training capacity supervised by a training officer or academy staff. Work methods and results are under constant review by supervisory personnel through observation, discussion, written and proficiency testing, and results achieved.
Upon completion of the academy and subject to departmental approval, a Deputy Recruit may be promoted to the Deputy Sheriff class. Except under special circumstances, a Deputy Recruit who fails to successfully complete the academy in which they are enrolled and promote to Deputy Sheriff will be terminated from the Deputy Recruit classification.
Typical Duties (Illustrative Only)
- Attend and obtain certification by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) academy to learn the principles, methods, and techniques employed by the Deputy Sheriff class.
- Attend indoor and outdoor classes and training sessions for preparation as a Deputy Sheriff.
- Perform rigorous physical training.
- Learn to drive a motor vehicle under normal and emergency conditions safely.
- Learn to demonstrate command presence in conflict situations.
- Learn to write clear, comprehensive, and accurate reports, legibly and with correct grammar and spelling.
- Learn to understand, interpret and apply criminal and civil laws.
- Learn use of various firearms and first aid methods.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: driving; working with and around other public officials, citizens, and staff; dealing with interruptions; writing weapons qualifications, telephones, etc. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, hazards including mechanical, burns, electrical, explosives, chemicals, heights, and other adverse atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, and others.
Minimum Qualifications
- U.S. citizen (Ariz. Admin. Code R13-04-105(A)(1) (2016)), 21 years of age at time of appointment, high school graduate (or G.E.D.).
Additional Requirements
- Obtain certification from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) within one year of employment with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.
- Pass AZPOST prescribed physical agility test.
- Obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
- Submit to a background search and successfully pass drug screen, physical, and polygraph examination prior to employment.
Ideal candidate will have knowledge of the local areas; previous law enforcement and/or military experience.
This position is non‑exempt from overtime. This position is safety sensitive.

- Relevant laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to civil process.
- Preparing and maintaining records and reports.
- Effectively and safely handle and discharge a firearm.
- Learn and apply law enforcement principles, rules, techniques, and the proper use of issued equipment.
- Act quickly and calmly with proper judgment in emergency situations.
- Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, community groups, and the public.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
