Assistant Professor and Coordinator of History Education

About the Position

The Department of History at Northern Arizona University invites applications for a tenure-track position in history/social studies secondary education. The successful applicant will serve as the program’s coordinator.

Responsibilities
  • Teach history and social studies methods courses in the BS Ed History/Social Studies program.
  • Maintain program assessments for CAEP accreditation.
  • Assist with program management and student advising.
  • Build collaborative relationships with Arizona social studies teachers.
  • Coordinate pre‑service and in‑service teacher workshops, and grant writing.
  • Conduct an active program of research and scholarship in the fields of teaching and learning, history education, history of education, and/or another related historical field.
  • Teach history content courses.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in history, history/social studies education, or a closely related field conferred by appointment date.
  • One year of secondary history/social studies teaching experience.
  • Combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrable commitment to serving students of all backgrounds and identities, including Latino and Native American students.
  • Two or more years of secondary history/social studies teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of the needs related to public education.
  • Evidence of a strong research agenda.
  • Evidence of scholarly engagement in the field of teaching and learning.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
  • Ability to offer history content courses to augment the department curriculum at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Evidence of potential for contributing to a dynamic social‑studies teacher preparation program and K‑20 collaborative partnerships, such as curriculum development, teacher collaborations, grant writing, and/or digital history.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge
  • Deep knowledge of history and social studies education, including pedagogy, curriculum design, and assessment practices.
  • Understanding of secondary education standards, policies, and accreditation requirements (e.g., CAEP).
  • Familiarity with diverse historical content areas to support undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
  • Awareness of current trends and research in teaching and learning, history education, and history.
  • Knowledge of inclusive teaching practices and the needs of diverse student populations.
  • Understanding of collaborative partnerships and public education systems.
Skills
  • Strong teaching skills in history/social studies methods courses and history content courses.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor students in fieldwork placements and professional development.
  • Ability to maintain an active research agenda.
  • Program coordination skills, including managing assessments for accreditation and organizing workshops for pre‑service and in‑service teachers.
  • Strong communication skills for building collaborative relationships with teachers, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Proficiency in digital instructional tools and online learning platforms.
Abilities
  • Ability to mentor students toward careers in K‑12 teaching and academia.
  • Ability to balance teaching, research, service, and program coordination responsibilities.
  • Ability to foster inclusive learning environments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and K‑12 educators across diverse settings.
