The Operating Room Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care for surgery patients following established standards and practices. This individual is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and efficient care in a surgical environment.
Responsibilities- Perform pre‑ and post‑op assessment for patients; assess vital signs and administer prescribed medications as directed.
- Carry out and monitor the nursing process, developing and evaluating a plan of nursing care for the patient.
- Anticipate patient needs for each case utilizing physician preference cards, knowledge, and experience.
- Dispense medications as ordered, observe, record, and report patient reactions to physicians; maintain accurate updates in the chart.
- Assist with circulating, scrubbing, sterile field maintenance, pain‑management procedures, and anesthesia support.
- Ensure all instruments, supplies, and equipment are prepared before surgery and understand the procedure to anticipate the surgeon’s needs.
- Assist with timely room turnover and prepare the OR for the next procedure.
- Assist in PACU as needed.
- Communicate effectively with staff, Director of Surgery, clinicians, patients, and families.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of nursing advances through continued education.
- Prioritize confidentiality in all situations.
- Participate in professional development activities and maintain required certifications.
- Attend required organizational meetings and committees.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and hold a current Registered Nurse license in Indiana.
- Minimum two years of experience as a registered nurse.
- Experience as a surgical, perioperative, or critical care nurse preferred.
- Must maintain BLS and ACLS certifications.
Physical Requirements
The work is performed in a surgical environment with exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and bodily fluids. The position requires standing, walking, and mobility for extended periods, full range of motion, manual dexterity, lifting up to 100 pounds, and normal visual and hearing acuity. Work may occur under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
