DescriptionThe Surgical Technician is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and efficient care in a surgical environment. This individual will handle the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure with a constant focus on the maintenance of the sterile field. Individuals in this position must have a solid understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
Responsibilities- Prepares delivery care with appropriate sterile and non-sterile instruments and supplies.
- Attends deliveries and hands required/requested instruments and supplies to surgeon during surgery.
- Assists with preparing, transporting, positioning and draping patients.
- Maintains instruments in an organized manner and monitors/tracks instrument counts throughout procedures.
- Scrubs procedures of varying degrees of difficulty proficiently.
- Performs technical skills and troubleshoots equipment with minimal assistance.
- Prepares procedures with available information such as surgery schedule (age, procedure, and requested special instrumentation) and physician preference sheet (updating physician preference sheet as requested per physician).
- Ensures needed supplies and instrumentation are present and functioning properly for each procedure.
- Properly disposes of supplies and instrumentation following procedures in a consistent and timely manner; assists with timely room turnover and prepares the operating room for the next procedure.
- Properly cleans and cares for instruments and equipment used in the surgical/procedure areas.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of changes in the Surgical Technologist field by attending classes and seminars and reading professional publications.
- Places a high priority on and maintains strict confidentiality in all situations.
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains applicable professional affiliations and certifications as required.
- Attends and participates in required organizational meetings and committees as requested.
- Performs additional related duties as assigned.
Graduate of a Surgical Technologist program and must hold a current Certified Surgical Technologist certification (CST) or obtain certification within six months of hire date to position. One year experience as a CST preferred. Must maintain BLS certification (or obtain within six months of hire date to position).
Working Conditions /Physical Requirements
Working environment is in a surgical environment. Exposure to infectious materials and other typical surgical environment conditions. Work requires standing and walking for extended periods. Position requires full range of body motion including reaching, bending, handling, lifting up to 100 pounds, and manual dexterity. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. May involve irregular hours and working under stress. Regular interaction with staff, physicians, and the public.

Associates or better. One year experience as a CST preferred.
