Overview
Under the general direction of the Assistant Parks, Recreation and Aquatics Director, assists in the planning, organizing, implementing and supervising of activities, programs and special events within the Aquatics division of the City of Fife Parks, Recreation and Aquatics Department. Must maintain flexibility and be available to meet with supervisory staff as required. Hours of work vary and include evenings and weekends which vary depending on time of year.
This position reports directly to the Aquatics Coordinator. Anticipated schedule:
Monday - Thursday - 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Facilitates special projects and programs with staff and community partners.
- Supervises activities in aquatic center.
- Assists in mentoring Swim Instructor/Lifeguards, volunteers and program participants.
- Attends and assists in all staff meetings as required.
- Communicates feedback between participants and program supervisor.
- Prepares documents such as letters, program evaluation forms, memos, accident reports, daily logs, updates membership database, etc.
- Performs cashier and front desk reception responsibilities.
- Answers public questions regarding programs and facilities.
- Assists in supervising the maintenance of equipment, supplies and facilities.
- Maintains compliance with all applicable City, County and State laws and City ordinances, policies and procedures at all times.
- Performs minor maintenance/janitorial duties in order to maintain a clean, safe and healthy environment in and around the pool. Duties may include, but are not limited to, organizing equipment, sanitizing various surfaces including public restrooms, and bodily fluid containment and clean-up.
- Performs facility opening and closing responsibilities.
- Utilizes Rec1 software system to process program registrations, "point-of-sale" transactions, and updating of client / patron accounts.
- Meets with program supervisor.
- Acts as the backup staff member to the Recreation Leader 3 position as necessary.
- Maintains supplies in first aid packs.
- Mentors new lifeguards/instructors.
- Teaches upper level swim lessons.
- Adjusts pool chemicals, and performs chemical testing.
- Assists with Red Cross Programming.
- Completes cash-in/out procedures.
- Monitors pool teaching equipment.
- Performs cashier duties and cash-out responsibilities as needed.
- Performs duties as a swim instructor.
- Performs duties as a lead lifeguard.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE – GENERAL:
- Minimum two years related experience.
- Must be at least 18 years old at time of hire.
Required Licenses/Training – Aquatics
- As a swim instructor, no certifications are required prior to start date.
- As a lifeguard all required certifications must be completed and continually maintained in a current status in CPR, First Aid, Blood-Borne pathogens, AED and Lifeguard Training.
OTHER PREFERRED SKILLS – GENERAL: (not required)
- Bilingual ability strongly desired.
- Familiarity with local community organizations and resources strongly desired.
OTHER PREFERRED SKILLS – AQUATICS: (not required)
- WSI or Swim America Certified.
- Lifeguard Instructor Trainer.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES – GENERAL
:
- Working knowledge of aquatic programs, services and appropriate activities for teens, youth and toddlers; strong interest in working with teens, youth and toddlers.
- Interact effectively and professionally with a wide variety of program participants and community members.
- Respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations.
- Accurately prepare reports, weekly calendars, letters, program evaluation forms, memos, accident reports, parent correspondence, permission slips, and other written material as assigned.
- Supervise the maintenance of equipment, supplies and facilities.
- Independently initiate and complete work activities.
- Ability to work with participants and city staff, teens and co-workers from diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
- Possess strong communication skills with the ability to understand and give verbal and written instructions.
- Knowledge of and ability to utilize conflict-resolution strategies.
- Explain and enforce facility and program guidelines, policies, and procedures.
