POSITION SUMMARY:
High school assistant coaches work in concert with the assistant coach to ensure the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships.
Per WIAA requirements, you must be at least 19 years of age to apply for any assistant coaching positions and 21 years of age to apply for any head coaching positions.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis list is representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed, and related duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
General- Professional Development and Leadership. The assistant coach keeps abreast of knowledge and techniques associated with the sport by staying current with sport-specific literature and attending clinics and workshops.
- Responsibility for Rules and Regulations. The assistant coach studies the rules and regulations of the sport, reads and understands the rules and regulations of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which the team competes.
- Program Promotion. The assistant coach promotes the sport within the school and in the community. Scores and contest-related information are reported to designated media and the league website immediately following each contest.
- Program Organization. The assistant coach attends practices and contests on a daily basis. Absences from practice should be rare and cleared in advance with the building athletic director; the head coach may be involved as directed. The assistant coach implements a system of play and/or instruction as directed by the head coach.
- Standard of Care. The assistant coach models safety training relative to the sport as directed by the head coach and has a working knowledge of basic athletic training skills and procedures, including basic taping and first aid functions.
- Professionalism. The assistant coach exercises good judgment and projects positive coaching behaviors. The role includes molding student athletes, teaching basic skills, leadership characteristics, and cooperative, team-oriented behavior in an even keel, calm, and fair-minded manner.
- Sportsmanship and Ethics. The assistant coach serves as an example of sportsmanship and humility, handles obstacles with grace and dignity, and models ethical behavior and good citizenship.
- Supervision. The assistant coach is responsible for participants from the time they report until the time they leave.
- Presentation of Rules/Regulations. The assistant coach understands and reinforces eligibility requirements, participation rules, and the District Eligibility Code as directed by the head coach.
- Attention to Eligibility Rules. The assistant coach ensures that team members have completed the eligibility process before practice participation.
- Accident/Injury Procedure. The assistant coach calls 911 for serious injuries and completes an Accident Report Form within 24 hours of injury. Emergency situations are reported to the building athletic director and director of athletics.
- Media Contact. The assistant coach reports scores promptly and accurately to local news media and the league website as directed.
- Meeting Attendance. The assistant coach attends building, district, league, and rules clinic meetings as scheduled and required by Federal Way Public Schools.
- Post-Season Awards Gathering. The assistant coach collaborates with the head coach to plan a post-season gathering involving participants from all levels and parents/guardians.
- Responsibility for Playing Facility and Equipment. The assistant coach reports safety concerns to the head coach and oversees care of equipment and facilities used in the program.
- Violations and Ejections Procedure. The assistant coach reports violations/ejections to the head coach, building athletic director, and director of athletics immediately following the contest.
