Shift Times: 2:00pm to 4:00pm practice; 2:00pm to 6:00pm meets

Responsibilities
  • Professional Development and Leadership. The head coach will stay current with sport-specific knowledge by reading literature and attending clinics and workshops.
  • Rules and Regulations. The head coach will study and understand the rules of the sport and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which the team competes.
  • Program Promotion. Promote the sport within the school and encourage student participation.
  • Program Organization. Hold daily practices; absences should be for illness or emergency and cleared in advance by the building athletic director.
  • Standard of Care. Provide safety training to all participants; maintain records of safety instruction; have working knowledge of basic athletic training skills, including basic taping and first aid.
  • Professionalism. Exercise good judgment, model positive coaching, develop leadership and teamwork, and maintain an even keel, calm and fair-minded approach.
  • Sportsmanship and Ethics. Model ethical behavior and good citizenship at all times.
  • Supervision. Responsible for participants from arrival to departure.
  • Rules/Regulations Presentation. Explain eligibility requirements, participation rules, and the District Eligibility Code in the first week of practice.
  • Eligibility Attention. Ensure participants complete eligibility before practice.
  • Accident/Injury Procedure. Call 911 for serious injuries; file an Accident Report within 24 hours; report emergencies immediately to the building athletic director and director of athletics.
  • Meeting Attendance. Attend building, district, and league meetings.
  • Facility and Equipment. Monitor facility condition and report safety concerns; care for equipment and facilities.
  • Violations and Ejections. Report violations/ejections to the appropriate administrators after contests.
  • Program Cuts and Awards Criteria. Develop/maintain criteria for program cuts; get pre-approval and share with participants in the first week of practice.
  • Coach Evaluation. Attend evaluation meeting after the season and present a program inventory.
  • Program Leadership. Meet with the assistant coach pre-season to align goals and instruction.
  • Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory. Manage program equipment/supplies, complete annual inventory, retrieve items after season, and manage fining, marking, and repair/storage timelines.
  • Annual Budget and Fundraising. Prepare/submit budget if requested; obtain prior approval for fundraising and complete required paperwork per district guidelines.
  • Other Duties. Perform related duties to support student learning objectives.
Position Summary

Middle school head coaches oversee growth and development of student athletes with focus on fundamental skills, academic and athletic excellence, leadership, and positive social relationships.

Requirements: As per WIAA requirements, you must be at least 19 years of age to apply for assistant coaching positions and 21 years of age to apply for head coaching positions.

Qualifications
  • Education and Experience — High school diploma or equivalent; one year of sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience; proven training in drills, safety, and skill application.
  • Additional Requirements — Consistent work-scheduled hours.
  • Preferred Qualifications — Three or more years of paid middle school and/or post-secondary coaching experience; completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course (including passing the test).
Condition of Employment
  • 21+ years of age; criminal background clearance;
    First Aid and CPR certification (hands-on).
