Overview
This is a seasonal position, ranging from 20-40 hours per week with no benefits.
- Interviews for selected applicants will take place between late February and June.
- Spring Break Camp:
April 6–10, with mandatory training on April 2–3. - Summer Camp:
June 22–August 28 at the Federal Way Community Center, with mandatory training dates in May/June (dates to be determined). - Staff hired for summer camp should expect to work on July 4 as part of the City’s Red, White and Blues Festival.
Day Camp Leaders are a vital part of the City of Federal Way’s Day Camp Program. Under the direction of the Community Recreation Coordinator, Day Camp Leaders support the daily care, supervision, and safety of campers ages 4–13. Leaders help create a positive, inclusive, and engaging camp environment by planning and leading recreational activities, building relationships with campers, and ensuring all children are safe, supported, and having fun.
Day Camp Leaders serve as representatives of the Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services and are expected to model professionalism, responsibility, and positive behavior. A uniform will be provided and must be worn during all working hours. Successful candidates for this position will be subject to a background check pursuant to RCW 43.43.832.
Responsibilities- Supervise and actively participate in camp-wide activities with campers of varying ages, serving as a positive role model at all times.
- Attend and actively engage in required trainings, including pre-camp preparation and ongoing in-season trainings.
- Work cooperatively with fellow Day Camp Leaders in a supportive, team-oriented manner to ensure camper safety and well-being, including maintaining appropriate health and hygiene standards.
- Build positive relationships with campers by demonstrating compassion, patience, empathy, and respect.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with coworkers, parents/guardians, and supervisors.
- Support and implement behavior guidance and discipline plans in a consistent and appropriate manner.
- Provide basic first aid and respond appropriately to injuries or emergencies.
- Complete required accident, incident, and program documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain a professional appearance, positive attitude, and high standard of conduct at all times.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Day Camp Supervisor or Community Recreation Coordinator.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Experience planning, implementing, and supervising recreational and/or educational activities for children is preferred.
- Current First Aid and Child/Adult CPR certification required.
- Ability to successfully pass a background check.
