Overview
The City of Fayetteville is recruiting for an Equipment Operator III in the Public Services Department to operate medium and heavy power-driven equipment requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Equipment may include refuse trucks, yard waste trucks, excavators, road-graders, knuckle boom trucks, etc., and duties include assisting with the collection of municipal solid waste, recycling materials, and debris removal from City streets and rights-of-way, as well as maintenance of streets, rights-of-way, parks, horticulture, cemeteries, and other City property.
This position acts as a lead worker on a crew and performs other maintenance-related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of the most difficult and complex heavy construction and maintenance equipment, supporting activities such as excavating, grading, loading, municipal solid waste, recycling, debris removal, and related operations (e.g., compressors, cement mixers, skip loaders, knuckle boom, bucket trucks).
- Participate in all required training classes in the classroom and field; practice safety rules and procedures and operate trucks and equipment with safe movements.
- Participate in repair and maintenance of City-owned properties (parks, cemeteries, streets, roads, alleyways, drainage systems); transport and deliver heavy equipment as required.
- Participate in collection, driving, hauling and disposal of municipal solid waste and yard debris; clean debris from ditches, culverts and creek beds; haul trash, debris, dirt, sand and gravel.
- Perform additional grounds and construction tasks such as reading grades/slope stakes, leveling, surfacing, concrete work, truck driving, asphalt spreading, jack-hammering, drainage excavation, back-filling, and related tasks.
- Identify equipment needs for projects; maintain records/logs; perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections; perform basic preventative maintenance on equipment.
- Install street barricades and cones prior to street repair activities; direct and control traffic at work sites.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and others using radios, digital phones, and onboard devices.
- Respond to emergencies and weather events using spreaders and snow removal equipment (front-end loaders, snowplows, tractors, etc.).
- Respond to public inquiries, investigate and resolve complaints within the area of assignment.
Experience
Two years of experience involving the skilled operation of refuse equipment or heavy construction and maintenance equipment in parks, cemeteries, horticultural environments, street repair/maintenance, or related field.
Training
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Required
- Possession of a Class B CDL, ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months of hire, and ability to maintain insurability.
- Ability to obtain a forklift certification within six months.
- Applicants with an active Class A CDL are preferred.
Preferred
- Flagger Training certification;
Confined Space Entry certification;
Work Zone Safety certification; FEMA training;
First Aid certification;
Jet Rodder training;
Lift Truck Instructor certification;
Trenching certification; AED certification.
From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last approximately 4 - 6 weeks. The process will include a panel interview with the selected candidate subject to a pre-employment drug screen, DOT physical, physical abilities test, background check, and driving history check.
