Primary Purpose of the Organization

Student Health Services provides quality health care for students enrolled at Fayetteville State University. It promotes conditions conducive to healthful living, guides and encourages students to accept health as a positive value of life, and stimulates an interest in students to make healthy adjustments to their environment. Activities focus on promoting the nine dimensions of wellness and good bio‑psycho‑social health care.

The mission is to serve as the student’s initial contact for assessing health problems or concerns. Students receive reasonable quality health care for minor illnesses and injuries and are referred to specialists or consultants when necessary. Each healthcare visit is used as an opportunity for health education. The services are student-centered, affordable, and accessible, utilizing a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to wellness and health care.

Primary Purpose of the Position

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides high‑quality, evidence‑based primary care to students within the Student Health Clinic. The NP independently evaluates, diagnoses, and manages acute and chronic health conditions, provides preventive care and education, and supports the overall health and wellness of a diverse college student population. This role works in collaboration with physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, and other campus partners to promote student well‑being and academic success.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive health assessments, including patient history and physical examinations
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic illnesses, including minor injuries, respiratory infections, gynecological issues, and mental health concerns
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests such as labs, EKGs, and imaging
  • Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with state licensure and collaborative agreements
  • Provide health counseling and education on topics such as contraception, nutrition, substance use, sexual health, and stress management
  • Support campus immunization compliance, deliver vaccinations, and participate in public health initiatives
  • Coordinate care and make referrals to specialists or community providers as needed
  • Document all clinical encounters accurately and timely in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, policy development, and accreditation efforts (e.g., AAAHC)
  • Collaborate with administrative and clinical staff to support smooth clinic operations
  • Maintain professional licensure, continuing education, and current knowledge of best practices
Working Conditions
  • Outpatient clinical environment on a college/university campus
  • May require occasional evenings or extended hours during high‑demand periods (e.g., orientation, flu season)
  • Involves regular use of computers and medical equipment
  • Must adhere to infection prevention protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • National certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP)
  • Current, unrestricted state licensure as a Nurse Practitioner
  • DEA registration
  • CPR (BLS) certification
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in primary or college health settings
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills
