Description of Work: The ARD is a temporary 11-month, live-in appointment within the Department of Housing and Residence Life. ARDs supervise and manage a residence hall community housing 100-350 students and support student development, community development, leadership development, activity development, administration, policy enforcement, crisis management and staff development. Advanced ARDs may have additional responsibilities and work full-time hours. ARDs act as building leads in the supervisor’s absence.

Attendance at ARD training and department trainings is mandatory. The ARD application is a yearly renewal process supervised by a Residence Life Administrator.

Responsibilities

Co-Supervision of Staff

  • Conduct weekly staff meetings with RAs.
  • Conduct individual one-on-one meetings with RAs every 2 weeks.
  • Provide ongoing training, recognition, and staff development opportunities.
  • Schedule RA staff for building coverage, including breaks, closings, post-exams, and graduation.
  • Hold staff members accountable for actions by routinely evaluating job performance.
  • Share concerns appropriately by avoiding direct confrontation in staff meetings: supporting in public, confronting in private.
  • Participate in RA selection and evaluation processes.
  • Role model appropriate behavior to maintain credibility and effectiveness.
  • Maintain professional relationships with student staff and residents.
  • Keep Residence Life Administrator informed of all situations and regularly discuss staff wellbeing and performance.
  • Advise students who are members of the community council.

Community and Student Leadership Development

  • Build community using the department’s community development plan and activity model.
  • Direct staff in creating events and initiatives that encourage resident involvement and growth.
  • Serve as a resource and referral agent for students’ academic, identity, and social needs.
  • Support and meet the needs of all students based on diverse characteristics.
  • Work with security to create a safe community.
  • Participate on at least one department committee as a collateral assignment.

Student Conduct and Crisis Management

  • Interpret and uphold university rules and the Student Code of Conduct and policies in an educational manner.
  • Handle crisis situations (mental health, roommate conflicts, conduct, staffing issues) with appropriate range of response.
  • Provide night and weekend on-duty coverage for approximately 1,600 residents.

Professional Development

  • Represent the department on university committees/work groups.
  • Participate in staff training and development opportunities offered by the Department of Residence Life and other campus departments.

Administration

  • Oversee budgets for residence hall programming and staff development (in coordination with the Residence Life Administrator).
  • Hold scheduled regular office hours in the residence hall staff office (afternoon/evening).
  • Coordinate check-in/check-out, building openings/closings, and room changes.
  • Complete paperwork timely; monitor voicemail, email, and office mailbox daily.
  • Attend departmental trainings and staff meetings; perform administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Assume on-call responsibilities with other staff on a rotating basis.
  • Safeguard keys; loss of staff or unassigned keys may result in employment implications.

Residence Hall Programming

  • Direct, support, and participate in RA programming efforts.
  • Collaborate with RAs to assess student needs and develop programming goals.
  • Be available in the residence hall for problem solving, referrals, mediation, and advising.
  • Be visible and accessible, including scheduled weekends.

Policy Enforcement

  • Uphold and enforce University and Department policies, including Conduct or Honor Code violations.
  • Clearly communicate policies to staff and students.
  • Assist RAs with confronting students violating policies.
