Overview
The Cumberland County Library is a cornerstone of the community, dedicated to serving residents and surrounding areas through access to information, recreation, and innovative programs for all ages. This position plays a vital role in maintaining welcoming, safe, and efficient library spaces by performing essential building and grounds maintenance. Your work will help ensure our facilities remain clean, attractive, and fully functional for both patrons and staff.

- Cleans, dusts, and sanitizes furniture, fixtures, and surfaces, including glass doors, windows, stainless steel, floors, and stairs
- Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and shampoos carpets to maintain clean and safe interior spaces
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms following established procedures and refills restroom dispensers and supplies as needed
- Empties, cleans, and maintains interior and exterior waste and recycling receptacles; properly disposes of trash and replaces liners
- Uses, cleans, and maintains hand tools and power equipment such as vacuums, carpet cleaners, ladders, and small power equipment
- Washes walls, shelves, mirrors, windows (interior and exterior), and equipment; inspects and maintains exterior walls and grounds free of debris
- Responds to emergencies, spills, and unexpected cleaning needs promptly and efficiently
- Assists with the setup and breakdown of meetings and events held at the library
- Performs exterior cleaning tasks, including removing trash, snow, and debris from sidewalks, stairs, and building entrances
- Completes minor maintenance and repairs, such as basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks, and requests janitorial supplies to keep inventory stocked
- Education and/or experience in housekeeping and/or custodial work that is directly related to the job
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, chemicals, and materials commonly used in custodial work
- Knowledge of proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens in accordance with safety standards
- Skill in safely and effectively operating and maintaining vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, buffers, and related tools
- Skill in communicating effectively and courteously with co-workers and the public
- Ability to observe and follow safety requirements related to cleaning solutions, chemicals, and equipment
- Ability to perform physical labor and complete tasks requiring strength, stamina, and mobility
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions accurately
- Ability to perform minor building and maintenance repairs
In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
