Primary Purpose of the Organization

The Division of Facilities Management functions to design, construct, maintain and operate the physical facilities of the University. The number one objective of the department is to provide and maintain facilities that will enhance and support the mission and academic goals of the University. Our approach is centered upon providing a superior level of customer service.

Primary Purpose of the Position

The primary purpose of this position is to clean and maintain floors and carpets in all buildings according to scheduled requirements and to maintain a high degree of quality throughout each assigned area of responsibility. This position supports the goals of the Building Environmental Services Department by ensuring standards of cleanliness are maintained throughout the campus. The floor technician is responsible for stripping, waxing, buffing, shampooing, extraction, and bonneting areas that include offices, lobbies, entrances, stairwells, and other public areas.

The technician responds to emergency calls adequately, assessing emergency situations to minimize losses and contacting appropriate personnel if needed. Working hours are Monday – Thursday 10:00 pm to 7:00 am, Friday 5:00 pm to 1:00 am. The position will work on‑call periods and respond to emergencies during those times, and it will also be required to support special events on campus outside of normal working hours.

The position is classified as mandatory, so it must report to work during adverse weather and other emergencies when the university may be closed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency.

Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

A valid driver’s license is required. The driver’s license must have an acceptable driving record, which may require up to five years of driving experience with no more than one minor fault accident or violation in the past three years. The University will review the driver’s license and records periodically for compliance.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to include safety shoes is required in designated work areas. Employees are responsible for obtaining and wearing the required safety shoes before beginning work and throughout the duration of work in areas where foot protection is necessary. Safety shoes should include a reinforced toe protection (steel or composite toe caps) to guard against falling objects, puncture‑resistant soles to prevent injuries from sharp objects and slip‑resistant outsoles to reduce the risk of slips and falls.
