Description

The City of Fayetteville's Police Department is seeking a Radio System Administrator to provide complex technical work in the day‑to‑day and long‑term operation of a multi‑agency trunked radio system and related infrastructure. The role involves developing and maintaining a database of all radio system users and channel access templates.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for first‑line maintenance and management of the radio system’s components and infrastructure.
  • Design system enhancements, program code plugs, upload code plugs into radios and base stations, and engineer solutions for specialized installation.
  • Provide skilled technical support of radio technology, equipment and systems for internal and external users in conjunction with City of Durham Radio System personnel.
  • Consult with users to define programming needs and recommend channel allocation and assignment; test and document outcomes of programming changes.
  • Assist with equipment upgrades, purchasing selection and vendor proposals for new equipment.
  • Develop, test, implement and maintain new radio system technology, coordinating staff, contractors and outside resources.
  • Coordinate scheduling of routine and preventative maintenance and repair for all radio communication systems and networks.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations, and maintain FCC licenses for the 911 Communications Center.
  • Assist the 911 Systems Analyst with troubleshooting and maintenance of UPS, generators and 911 furniture mechanisms.
  • Maintain records and logs, including maintenance logs, usage logs for billing, equipment inventory and parts listing; prepare reports as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience

Two years of increasingly responsible technical experience in full‑spectrum trunked and conventional radio communications systems, electronic equipment installation, maintenance or repair, or a related field. Experience in emergency communication systems is preferred.

Training

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in electronic or communications engineering or a related field.

Licensing & Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability.
  • Motorola training program certificate or the ability to obtain one within one year of hire.

Special Requirements
  • Subject to pre‑employment polygraph and/or CVSA testing.
  • Must pass a North Carolina Criminal Justice Network (CJIN) security screening within thirty (30) days of hire.
Selection Process

From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last approximately 4–6 weeks. The process will consist of a panel interview followed by a pre‑employment drug screen, a background investigation, driving history check, and a polygraph/CVSA conducted by the Police Department.
