Overview
Description This is a part-time, non-sworn position. The City of Fayetteville is recruiting for Traffic Control Officers to provide protection for pedestrians crossing roadways enroute to and from school, and to assist bus and other school-related traffic to enter and exit the school grounds in a safe and timely manner.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Direct pedestrians across streets after assessing traffic flow to identify breaks to allow for visibility and safe crossing.
- Understand the traffic laws, signs and speed limits posted within a designated jurisdiction to effectively guide vehicles and people.
- Communicate crossing rules and regulations to students and ensure their understanding for optimal safety.
- Collaborate with officials to develop traffic patterns that are conducive to safety, efficiency and convenience.
- Maintain a crossing area that is free of hazards, and employ the appropriate tools and equipment, including lights, flags and hand signals.
- Identify drivers who are speeding or driving carelessly and notify authorities by documenting their license plate number.
- Watch for impending dangers and develop effective solutions before an accident occurs.
- Report the unsafe behavior of students to school officials to reduce the risk of someone getting hurt while crossing or waiting to cross a street.

Experience: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Licensing & CertificationsRequired: Possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability.
Preferred: None.
Special Requirements- This position is subject to pre-employment polygraph and/or CVSA testing.
- SBI/Fingerprinting Criminal History Record Check Requirement: may be subject to a criminal history record check in accordance with applicable laws. The City may consider the results of these checks in its hiring decisions.
From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last approximately 4–6 weeks. The process will consist of a panel interview with the selected candidate being subject to a pre-employment drug screen and a background investigation, driving history check and polygraph and/or CVSA to be conducted by the Police Department. Deferred Compensation Plans: Effective January 1, 2025, part-time, seasonal and temporary employees are eligible to participate in the NC 401(k) and NC 457 plan. Plans are administered by Empower. Enrollment options include NC 457 and NC 401(k) (eligibility begins January 2025).
