Overview
The Cumberland County Library is more than a place for books—it’s a welcoming hub where our community connects, learns, and explores its shared history. This Librarian I position offers a meaningful opportunity to work closely with residents by providing advanced library services in the Local and State History and Adult Services Departments. Under general direction, the Librarian curates and cares for local history collections, brings stories to life through engaging programs in local and state history and genealogy, and finds creative ways to make these resources accessible to everyone.

- Staffs a public service point and provides prompt, high-quality customer assistance
- Delivers proactive reference services, responding to complex inquiries related to information resources, technology, genealogy, and family history
- Performs intermediate troubleshooting and support for library equipment and technology
- Trains customers in the effective use of library resources and equipment, including the online catalog and electronic databases
- Resolves intermediate customer complaints and refers complex issues to the Local and State History Manager or Headquarters Manager as appropriate
- Interprets, enforces, and communicates library policies and rules governing the use of facilities and resources
- Provides in-depth readers’ advisory services tailored to individual interests and needs
- Offers one-on-one instruction and training for customers by appointment
- Plans, prepares, and presents engaging programs for adult and all-ages audiences, as well as staff training on topics such as genealogy, reference fundamentals, database searching, readers’ advisory, and emerging technologies
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in library science is required.
- Knowledge of basic reference and genealogy sources and research techniques
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work, including planning and implementing library programs and services and providing reference and informational services to patrons
- Knowledge of the organization of the Department and of related departments and agencies
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library operations as applied within a public library specialty area
- Knowledge of and awareness of library policies and procedures
- Skill in expressing ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to assist readers in the selection and interpretation of print and electronic resources
- Ability to demonstrate the use of the online public access catalog and computers to the public
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel and the general public

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
