Overview
Field Service Technician-Network at TDS Telecom. This role involves installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases, including systems such as Key Systems, PBX, Centrex, and other business systems. You will perform work related to splicing and maintaining outside plant facilities and equipment, and install, splice, repair, and maintain aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and copper cable.
You will have direct, face-to-face contact with customers and are expected to be proactive with the sales of TDS services and products. Services include, but are not limited to, Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and/or high-speed networks.
Due to in-field support and on-call requirements, the selected candidate must reside within a 60-minute driving distance from Farragut, TN. This position can be hired at either a Field Service Technician or Field Service Technician-Network level depending on skills and qualifications. Refer to the corresponding job postings for minimum qualifications and apply for each level you are interested in and qualified for.
Responsibilities- Assist with and perform on-site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products and services for new and existing customers. Identify defective cable locations using testing equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and/or customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs.
Communicate with customers about pole climbing and operating construction equipment as required. Locate, identify, and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage. Maintain an orderly log of all locate requests. Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities. - Provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections. Respond to trouble dispatches.
- Support and maintain record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
- Provide excellent customer service, proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers.
- Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices related to splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment.
Required Qualifications
- 1+ year of basic technical telecommunications experience, or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
- 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs.
Other Qualifications
- Upon hire, must successfully complete customer-specific requirements, which may include a background check.
- Available for on-call/standby responsibilities and occasional travel. Willingness to work overtime as needed.
- Must successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
- Ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVRW.
- Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of telecommunication products and services including Inside Wiring, Internet, Bonding & Grounding, Data & Computers/Transmission Concepts, Fiber Optic Transmission, Static Sensitive Equipment, Color Codes, Structured Wiring, Video/CATV/DBS Installation, Inventory Systems, Cable Locating, Battery Maintenance, Key Systems/PBX, Centrex, Switch Maintenance, Voicemail, and related areas.
- Experience with common computer applications (Databases, Trouble/Repair/Dispatch Systems, Plant Record Systems, MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Explorer).
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated customer service and sales skills and effective communication with internal and external customers.
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking abilities.
- Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.

The associate is regularly required to sit, stand, write, and operate a computer keyboard and standard office equipment. Frequent interaction with customers is expected. Lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally; potential for climbing and outdoor work in varying weather conditions. The role may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
