Salary: NHS Specialty Grade £61,542 - £99,216 + £149 fringe, + on‑call payment
Job SummaryThis post is for a Specialty Doctor who will be responsible for providing clinical input to two of the working age adult wards in the purpose‑built mental health unit at Farnham Road Hospital in Guildford, as part of the Acute Care Pathway. There are other opportunities to take on additional responsibilities with remuneration, including a middle‑grade on‑call rota subject to Section 12 approval.
MainDuties
- Assessment, diagnosis, formulation and review of management plans for service users.
- Flexible review and reassessment of service users to evaluate response to treatment and readiness to access other parts of the Acute Care Pathway.
- Support any trainees attached to the team under the supervision of the consultant psychiatrist.
- Develop a wide range of psychiatric skills, including group work, maintaining up‑to‑date knowledge of psychotropic medication and basic competency in neurology.
- Attend Care Programme Approach & Section 117 meetings and mental health review tribunals.

Job Responsibilities- Provide clinical input to two working‑age adult wards.
- Manage a broad range of psychiatric skills including group work and neurology basics.
- Attend multidisciplinary meetings and tribunals.
- Support trainees and work under consultant supervision.
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
- Full medical registration with a licence to practice.
- Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act (or within 6‑12 months of interview/assessment) or equivalent.
- Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
- Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice.
- Excellent clinical skills using a bio‑psycho‑social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
- Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty; make decisions based on evidence and experience.
- Ability to meet duties under the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.
- Experience working with various patient groups presenting across the full range of clinical severity and care settings.
- Ability to take a clinical leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high‑quality care.
- Ability to appraise own performance as a Specialty Doctor and reflect on development needs.
- Participation in continuous professional development.
Desirable
- Relevant higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc) or additional clinical qualifications.
- MRCPsych or equivalent.
- Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills.
- Specific training qualification/certificate or attendance on a recognised teaching course.
- Published audit or research projects.
- In good standing with GMC concerning warnings and conditions on practice.
