- Licensed Practical Nurse responsible for basic nursing duties including execution of physician orders, operation of pill call, sick call, assisting physician in examinations and treatments, and performing technical/clinical procedures within license scope.
- Assist in professional management of facility medical department.
- Apply nursing skills in care and treatment of inmates/residents.
- Attend sick call with physician, prepare list of inmates/residents to be examined, prepare examining room and equipment.
- Operate pill call, dispense medication, document as required.
- Control medication, syringes, medical supplies, inventory as per procedures.
- Perform emergency procedures as needed.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of equipment and work area.
- Document and report activities per policies including medical file documentation.
- Assist supervisor in evaluating medical services to prevent inappropriate duplication.
- Maintain security and confidentiality of medical records.
- Observe and record inmate/resident behavior.
- Inspect medical unit for contraband, securely store or dispose supplies and equipment.
- Prepare and maintain various records, reports, and logs; process reports timely.
- Read and interpret medical and technical procedures, regulations, legal documents.
- Respond to lawsuits, attend court hearings as necessary, conduct chart research.
- Communicate effectively with administration, staff, inmates/residents, visitors, and public.
- Help evaluate and recommend physical safety requirements for safe working environment.
- Facilitate accreditation of medical program (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO) by providing efficient and appropriate medical services.
- Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports; take action in serious incidents and emergencies.
- Escort or coordinate movement of inmates/residents for medical treatment.
- Initiate and complete investigations and inquiries accurately; exercise independent judgment for disciplinary action.
- Work in confined areas, rotating shifts, physically check security of doors, windows, and other areas.
- Be aware of potential verbal abuse in hostile environment.
Job Details
- Graduate from an approved school of nursing with a certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
- Must be licensed in the state of employment (Virginia).
- A valid driver's license is required.
