Location: Farmville, VA Category: Classified Posted On: Fri Dec 19 2025 Job Description: Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Occupational Safety Manager / Compliance Safety Officer IV (00305) in Environmental Health and Safety. The selected candidate will ensure the University is in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and standards concerning hazardous materials and occupational health, as well as ensure an injury-free work culture for all faculty, staff, students, contractors, and visitors of the University and its properties.
This position is considered to be emergency personnel, and must report to work or be called in due to inclement weather, in the case of emergency, staff shortage, etc.
This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties- Assist with new employee orientations, providing information about their responsibilities concerning safety and safety programs.
- Conduct training and evaluate workplace safety and health programs.
- Inspect and evaluate workers, workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure safety standards and government regulations are being followed.
- Control and fix hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.
- Demonstrate the correct use of safety equipment.
- Ensure safety requirements are identified and met by the university.
- Investigate workplace accidents to identify underlying causes and develop strategies to prevent future occurrences.
- Serve as a university subject matter expert.
- Provide counsel to university and administrative departments and personnel.
- Serve as a representative of EH&S for the university safety committee and various other committees and meetings as designated by the director.
- Develop, maintain, and implement safety programs and procedures to ensure the protection of employees, students, and facilities in compliance with all town, county, and state hazardous materials regulations.
- Conduct education programs while keeping detailed records that can be used as supporting evidence during an official audit that verifies required training is being performed.
- Direct all activities associated with the university's hazardous materials management program and assess compliance in university facilities via periodic inspections.
- Perform periodic facility safety inspections as directed by the director, identifying compliance and best practice issues, and conducting follow-up visits when an infraction is found.
- In the case of a hazardous materials spill on campus, respond as necessary, investigate, collect and analyze evidence, interview witnesses, and determine the origin and cause. Process and document the evidence, such as photographs and diagrams, and keep detailed records.
- Confer with facility planners to review plans of new construction or retrofitted buildings.
- Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge in areas of responsibility through contacts with industry peers and involvement with professional associations.
- Attend conferences and local and regional meetings as required to stay current and maintain certifications.
- Cross-train in the Hazardous Materials Occupational Safety program to provide program coverage, which includes Lab Standard, HAZ-COM, Exposure Monitoring, Glove Selection, OSHA Chemical Specific Standards, and Safety Data Sheets.
- Cross-train with the Fire Safety program manager to provide program coverage in their absence.
- Abide by and enforce university safety and security policies.
- High school diploma required;
Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Management or Safety Engineering, or Sciences, or equivalent knowledge and experience preferred. - Proven knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials management in educational institutions, high-rise, high-hazard, residential, and business occupations.
- Knowledge of the principles of safety, accident prevention, and chemical hazards.
- Strong working knowledge of computer technology to generate letters, policies, databases, and reports.
- Ability to plan, develop, and conduct training programs for a variety of audiences, including faculty, staff, and students.
- Demonstrated ability to accurately record observations, note violations, and present corrective recommendations in an articulate and professional manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with building and fire officials, construction and design professionals, and other local governmental officials, as well as the general public.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Suite.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- The selected candidate is expected to be available during off-hours for emergency consultations and may be required to return to campus to resolve said emergency.
