Job Description: The Department of Music in the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences is seeking a full-time, non-tenure-track renewable position (F0105) at the rank of Lecturer beginning in August 2026, with part-time work during the summer 2026 available. Reporting to the Department of Music and in collaboration with Longwood Athletics, this individual will be responsible for building the athletic band program for the university.

The Stampede Athletic Band is the featured performer at Longwood men’s and women’s basketball games in the Joan Perry Brock Center. This individual will also be responsible for conducting the University Band (concert ensemble).

The Lecturer in Music / Assistant Director of Bands will be responsible for the equivalent of 15 credit hours of teaching per semester to be comprised of the following professional responsibilities:

Responsibilities
  • Direct and rehearse Stampede Athletic Band.
  • Direct the University Band ensemble.
  • Teach applied lessons in one of the following areas: percussion, French horn, saxophone, flute, or double reeds, for music majors, minors, and non-music majors.
  • Carry out administrative duties related to the Athletic Band, including budget management, coordinating with the Athletics department, travel, and student recruitment.

Depending on qualifications, additional duties may include courses in instrumental music education, such as Marching Band Techniques, and/or music courses in Civitae, Longwood's signature general education curriculum.

In addition to the primary responsibility of innovative undergraduate teaching, faculty are expected to collaborate with colleagues, engage in appropriate committee work, attend university and departmental events, and recruit new students.

This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.

Qualifications
  • The successful candidate must have an earned Master’s Degree in Music by August 2026, with one degree in Music Education
  • High school level teaching experience required; college-level teaching experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 graduate credits earned in an applied area of study or commensurate teaching and performing experience.
  • Previous experience with athletic band management and collaboration with an athletics program preferred.
  • Candidates must demonstrate commitment to student recruitment and the development of relationships with secondary school music teachers.
  • A demonstrated ability and commitment to working with diverse populations and perspectives of students, faculty, and staff in support of the university mission is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to candidates whose general teaching credentials best complement the expertise of current music faculty.
Additional Information

This is a full-time, non-tenure-track instructional faculty position. Salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience. A successful fingerprint-based criminal background investigation is required. Ameri Corps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
