The purpose of this position is to maintain all traffic control devices within the City, including traffic signals, school flashers, all street signs, highway lighting, and provide emergency response to all street problems, pot holes, trees down, signals, signs, and highway.

Monitors and maintains all traffic control devices within the City; inspects traffic signal construction projects and field operations to ensure they are conducted properly and safely; replaces traffic signals ensuring proper installation procedures and methods are used; and troubleshoots and repairs system and equipment.

Performs preventative maintenance on all traffic control devices according to maintenance schedule; maintains inventory control for daily operations and special projects. Programs traffic controllers both manually and by using signal control software.

Investigates and resolves citizen complaints received via email, phone, or in person.

Completes checklists, work orders, daily reports and logs in a timely manner.

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.

Over one year, up to and including three years of experience is required.

Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check, must pass a DOT-regulated drug/alcohol test, a motor vehicle review and successfully complete the FMCSA Clearinghouse background Check.Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.

This position normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.

Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

Intermediate ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias, to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement, and to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.

Considerable knowledge of processes and procedures of traffic signal installation, repair, and maintenance; considerable knowledge of the Texas M.U.T.C.D. as related to construction, school zones, and traffic signals. Knowledge of N.E.M.A. functions TS-1-1989 as they pertain to traffic signal control equipment. Familiarity with emergency vehicle preemption systems and methods of traffic signal synchronization. Knowledge and experience in working on highway lighting systems.

Special Requirements:

Must be available for emergency call-outs on a rotating basis, including after hours and holidays.

This position is classified as a DOT position and is subject to drug and alcohol testing, ongoing driver record checks, and is subject to all U.S. DOT regulations during the course of employment.

Licenses and Certificates:

Valid class "B" commercial drivers license with good driving record and ability to maintain while employed.

International Municipal Signal Association Level One certification is required;
Level Two Traffic Signal Technician certification must be obtained within 18 months of employment.

Work Environment:

Work involves extreme exposure to disagreeable elements, and extreme weather conditions. Involves continuous outdoor work with frequent exposure to poor weather conditions. Physical demands include frequent lifting of heavy objects weighing 50 lbs. Continuous physical exertion, requiring heavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue of arms, back or sensory facilities. Sufficient physical stamina to walk a majority of the workday. Extensive bending, stooping, and climbing.
