Protects life and property by performing firefighting activities, emergency aid, hazardous materials response, and fire prevention duties. This position may also be required to maintain fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Paid on-call firefighters train to the same standards as full-time personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Perform firefighting activities including fire suppression, ventilation, ladder operations, search and rescue, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose lines and other firefighting tasks.
- Drive and operate firefighting vehicles.
- Participate in fire drills, attend classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
- Operate radio and other communication equipment.
- Performs emergency aid activities including administering first aid and providing other assistance as required.
- Search for and/or rescue victims at fire and accident sites under adverse or hazardous conditions.
- Perform salvage operations such as placing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.
- Participate in community relations, fire prevention, education, and inspection programs.
- Must be able to multiply, divide, use fractions and read graphs.
- Must be capable of reading fire protection textbooks, write reports with proper grammar and speak correctly in public.
- Cleans and maintains equipment, apparatus and quarters; performs general maintenance and minor repairs to station facilities.
- Ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with co-workers, other public agencies, and the general public.
- Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
Education and Experience
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must possess a current and valid Minnesota Driver's license.
- All Paid On-call Firefighters shall have a response requirement of 20 minutes with the time measured from their residence to the fire station. All traffic regulations, including speed limits must be adhered to.
- Must pass physical ability and written comprehension test.
- Must be able to abide by all grooming standards set forth in guidelines.
- First Responder certification
- Current EMT certification
- MNEMSRB certification
- Completed coursework in Firefighter I
- Completed coursework in Firefighter II
- Associates degree in fire science or related field
Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief. This person also reports to, and is under the direction of, the on-duty Officer-in-charge and other full-time personnel as required.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDMay assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise the work of other paid on-call firefighters and new recruits as assigned.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USEDEmergency medical/rescue response unit, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses and other standard firefighting equipment including ladders, first aid equipment, computers, radios, pagers and telephones.
