Essential Functions of Crew Leader
  • Supervises a line clearance crew and plans daily work for the crew.
  • Assigns work for individual crew members and directs crew in performing work according to accepted line clearance practices. Must be capable of adjusting to field requirements and taking independent action without close supervision.
  • Recognizes poisonous plants and uses proper safeguards against them.
  • Enforces safe work practices, as specified by experience, judgment, company policy, and OSHA; conducts safety training per company policies and procedures.
  • Obtains oral or written permission from property owners to trim or remove trees and apply herbicides. Arranges access with customers or property owners, informs them of interruptions, and explains the work. Repairs minor damages if they occur. Escalates complex situations to the General Foreperson.
  • Promotes and maintains good customer and public relations through effective completion of assigned work and appropriate employee behavior.
  • Keeps accurate records, timesheets, and reports related to crew performance; provides reports of orders completed, units of work, crew time and distribution to supervisor and utility representatives.
  • Receives and interprets tree trimming, removal and chemical application orders involving drawings and symbols for power lines, voltages, and line equipment.
  • Responsible for safety training of assigned personnel in accordance with good safety training procedures and client policies.
  • Controls crew costs through effective use of manpower, methods, trimming amount, and equipment operation.
  • Considers weather conditions and determines when to start or stop work based on impact on employees and tasks.
  • Safeguards employees and the public from hazards; cooperates with customer, police, and fire departments when blocking streets or driveways. Sets up barriers, warning signs, and flags as needed. Trains in tree and bucket rescue. Enforces safe work practices and policies.
  • Responsible for truck inspection, vehicle conditions, and tool/equipment repairs; maintains good housekeeping at worksites.
  • In emergencies, determines proper actions to eliminate hazards and expedite restoration of service, including calling out crew personnel.
  • Trims and/or removes trees by climbing with safety equipment or from the ground; cuts branches or trunks and lowers them safely.
  • Uses appropriate tools to fell trees or trim trunks and splits them into pieces.
  • Sprays stumps and brush with hand-spraying equipment to prevent regrowth.
  • Loads/unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris; may feed material into a wood chipper.
  • Repairs minor damages to lawns, fences, and walks caused by trimming.
  • Operates and maintains gasoline, air, and hand-powered tools and equipment.
  • Relays hand-signals, directs traffic, and ensures trucks/work areas are orderly.
  • Trains new employees on proper procedures.
  • Works around hazardous equipment and near energized power lines.
  • Works around loud machinery and must wear proper PPE.
  • Exposure to various temperatures and conditions; may encounter irritants, insects, dust, etc.
  • May work on rough terrain.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience on tree trimming or clearing crews, or have completed applicable performance reviews.
  • Excellent leadership skills; able to handle stressful situations and multi-task.
