Job Title:
Refrigeration Mechanic
The Refrigeration Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on all refrigeration and air‑conditioning systems. This role supports advanced‑level maintenance staff to ensure all equipment and facilities remain in optimal condition for continuous, efficient operation.
Responsibilities- Inspect and maintain refrigeration components daily, including compressors, evaporators, valves, filters, and freon units.
- Monitor and maintain boilers, water treatment levels, and airflow systems.
- Install and replace pumps, switches, safety controls, solenoids, and fuses.
- Repair refrigeration pipes and fittings.
- Assist with ordering parts and maintaining accurate records.
- Support major repairs, equipment setup/teardown, and plant construction projects.
- Perform advanced refrigeration tasks, such as isolating ammonia lines, replacing valves and pumps, resetting compressors, and calibrating temperature probes and CO₂ monitors.
- Maintain tools and work areas in a safe, clean condition.
- Participate in Hazmat training and assist with Hazmat team operations.
- Train maintenance staff on proper equipment care.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA standards, and safe work practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent (required);
Associate degree in a maintenance trade (preferred). - Minimum 2 years of related experience in refrigeration or industrial maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret manuals, diagrams, and schematics.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.
- Knowledge of refrigeration systems, boilers, and ammonia compressors.
- Must be able to wear and operate an Air Purifying Respirator (APR) and/or Self‑Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA); HAZMAT certifiable.
- Ability to obtain a boiler license.
- Advanced electrical and mechanical maintenance experience.
- Competence in completing work orders and following written, oral, or diagram‑based instructions.
- Basic math skills, including ability to calculate proportions, percentages, area, and volume.
- Mechanical aptitude with willingness to expand skills through on‑the‑job and formal training, including OSHA‑required courses.
- Basic computer skills, including maintenance software modules.
- Ability to obtain a forklift license.
- Compliance with all safety policies and OSHA regulations.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with HVAC, industrial repair, ammonia refrigeration, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, installation, service, and EPA guidelines.
- Familiarity with refrigeration equipment, air conditioning, fabrication, electrical systems, compressors, and refrigeration systems.
- Knowledge of EPA universal regulations, HVAC equipment, HVAC maintenance, blueprint reading, and refrigerant handling.

Work EnvironmentThis role involves a combination of office and plant settings with exposure to warm, cold, wet, dry, and foggy conditions. The position requires frequent standing, walking, and use of hands for handling tools and equipment, with occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Safety is a priority, and required personal protective equipment includes a bump cap, safety glasses/goggles, ear protection, hair/beard nets, gloves, and safety footwear.
The role involves lifting and moving up to 25 lbs occasionally, up to 50 lbs frequently, and up to 150 lbs with assistance.
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $35.00/hr.
