The Equipment Technician II performs a variety of technical, mechanical and general repair or maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. This is the second level of a three level series. It is differentiated from the first level in that tasks are of a higher level of technical difficulty involving diagnostic skills and major component rebuilding. The Equipment Technician II performs work on high value equipment where proper preventive maintenance is necessary in order to preserve assets and avoid injuries attributable to equipment failure.

Work direction and training will be provided to less experienced technicians.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
:
  • Rebuilds or repairs major and minor components found on the different types of vehicles and equipment operated by various departments.
  • Transports and test drives equipment while performing vehicle safety inspections to ensure proper function.
  • Diagnoses various equipment and vehicles when malfunction occurs by communicating with onboard computers and/or utilizing other testing devices. Makes recommendations to supervisor on appropriate repair procedures.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and/or equipment including safety compliance checks, in order to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Performs all phases of major and minor repair on the bodies of vehicles operated by the departments including painting, surface preparation, fiberglass repair, rust proofing, window replacement, and frame straightening.
  • Welds components to the vehicles as needed for function or safety.
  • Installs and fabricates accessories and safety devices for specialty vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists other Public Works Departments with operational duties as needed.
  • Estimates time, parts, tools and equipment needed for repair; completes necessary forms and enters information into the fleet maintenance system.
  • Fabricates parts and special tools needed to perform repairs or to rebuild equipment according to specifications.
  • Makes recommendations as to design changes to improve performance or maximize the operational life of equipment.
  • Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
  • Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
  • Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices.
  • Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists.
  • When potentially unsafe conditions are observed, makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable.
  • Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    The job requires an associate's degree in an appropriate mechanical specialty, such as automotive and diesel technology, and three or more years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid commercial driver's license (CDL Class

    B) with an air brake endorsement is required. Appropriate DOT certification and ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification are required. Incumbent will also be required to furnish a complete set of hand tools needed to complete the essential duties of the position.

    • Knowledge of proper and safe procedures of hazardous materials handling.
    • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the workplace.
    • Knowledge of machine shop practices, welding, cutting, and other metal working techniques.
    • Knowledge of concepts, principles and techniques relating to the operation, maintenance and repair of a wide range of automotive and diesel equipment.
    • Knowledge of engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brake systems, HAVC, fuel injection, electrical, electronic and computer diagnostics.

    • Skill in written English sufficient to read technical manuals and instructions.
