Job Summary
Provides primary health care including client assessments, developing treatment plans and client education following prescribed guidelines.
Scope of ResponsibilityResponsible for quality and accuracy of his or her own work. Work is performed independently under general supervision. Provides work direction to Public Health Nurses, LPNs, Medical Assistants, and support staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
- Frequently interacts with others in the work unit, the public, vendors or across departments to exchange detailed and/or technical information;
- Interaction with the public, vendors/ community partners or across departments occasionally includes negotiations involving convincing the other party to do something to achieve a basic work‑related objective.
- Responds to Public Health Emergencies.
- Has a working knowledge of the National Incident Management System for emergency preparedness and has completed the courses required for their job;
- Fulfills roles within the Department’s Emergency Operations Plan as determined by Emergency Preparedness and Management staff;
- During an actual emergency, is accessible 24/7 with an established family contingency plan in place.
- Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
- Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;
- Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work;
- When potentially unsafe conditions are observed makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and brings them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.
- Performs client health history and physical examination, and necessary diagnostic testing and procedures.
- Provides education and counseling to patients emphasizing preventative health care practices and makes referrals to community resources as needed.
- Reviews and interprets test results, following up with client to discuss treatment options as needed.
- Develops and implements client treatment plans in collaboration with the client.
- Prescribes medications and educates client on drug regime, interactions and side effects;
- Consults with Medical Director and refers to other medical providers as indicated.
- Maintains client documentation and updates clinic procedural manual as needed.
- Represents the department on various committees at the local, state, and federal level.
- Acts as preceptor and provides educational experiences for Medical, Nurse Practitioner or other health related field students.
- Provides educational classes within the department and in the community.
- Is a mandated reporter for abuse and neglect issues.
- Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
The job requires a Bachelor’s degree in nursing and successful completion of a nurse practitioner program and three or more years of professional nursing experience, preferably with a community health program and experience with women’s health. Also required are a State of North Dakota registered nurse license and an advanced practice license with prescription authority.
Knowledge, skills and ability include:- All knowledge and skills required to the attainment of state and federal license;
- Knowledge of community medical and social resources;
- Excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, patients and the general public sufficient to interpret sometimes vague or ambiguous medical conditions, exchange or convey complex information;
- Skill in organization and prioritizing work;
- Skill in oral and written presentation;
- Skill in recordkeeping;
- Skill in written English sufficient to read manuals, instructions, care plans and to write reports and complete documentation, etc.;
