ResponsibilitiesReceives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special examinations. Performs complex histological procedures using techniques to gross, embed, perform microtomy, and stain to make tissue slides used for diagnosis. Review slide quality. Maintain and repair lab instruments. Disinfects work area and stocks supplies. Ensure all lab safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met. Use critical and independent judgment in decision-making and problem solving.
Interact with clients of all ages as needed. Perform routine duties in all areas of the Histology Laboratory. Recognize the responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interact with respect for their jobs and patient care. Assist in writing and reviewing current and new procedures in the department and changes in hospital policy and procedures. Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities associated with the laboratory.
- Bachelor's degree in Laboratory or Biological Sciences required.
- Prior Histology Experience Preferred.
- Possess an HHS (Health and Human Services) approved certification, e.g., American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in their field of work, or must be registry eligible upon hire and receive certification (Histology Technician (HT) or Histology Technologist (HTL)) within twelve months.
