The North Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs (NDDVA) is committed to ensuring Veterans and their families receive the benefits they have earned through honorable service to our nation. We provide support with claims, education, healthcare, financial assistance, and administer critical programs such as hardship grants, housing assistance, transportation grants, and the Veterans Aid Loan.
Our mission is to ensure North Dakota Veterans and their families receive all entitled benefits, delivered directly or through County and Tribal Veterans Service Officers.
The Veterans Benefits Specialist serves as a trusted advocate and subject matter expert for Veterans navigating federal and state benefit systems. In this role, you will guide Veterans through the claims process, assist with preparing and substantiating benefit applications with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA), and represent claimants before USDVA adjudicating bodies. This is an in office position working in the Fargo, ND office.
You will also serve as a key resource for County Veterans Service Officers, community partners, and the public, helping strengthen statewide service delivery and ensuring Veterans receive accurate, timely, and compassionate support.
Key Responsibilities- Assist Veterans and their families with preparing, submitting, and supporting claims for federal and state benefits
- Represent claimants before USDVA adjudicating bodies and support appeals when needed
- Serve as a liaison between NDDVA, County and Tribal Veterans Service Officers, and USDVA offices
- Provide technical guidance and training on veterans' benefits and related programs
- Coordinate with National and County Service Officers at USDVA healthcare facilities and Regional Offices
- Participate in outreach, education, and community engagement efforts
- Perform other duties as assigned
- A bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, human resources, social work, or a closely related field OR
- A high school diploma or GED plus four years of relevant professional experience, including:
- Experience working with veterans benefits or related programs
- Experience conducting investigations or gathering evidence for claims, complaints, or appeals
- Background in public relations, community outreach, or public service
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systems
