The Role

Our client is a well established engineering consulting firm supporting public infrastructure projects across the Upper Midwest. This Engineering Technician role is primarily focused on transportation projects and supports the planning, design, and construction of roadway and municipal infrastructure. The position offers a mix of office‑based CADD design work and field support during construction, working closely with engineers and project managers in a collaborative team environment.

Job Description

The Engineering Technician provides technical drafting, design, and construction support for transportation and municipal projects, including highways, urban roadways, and utilities. This role contributes throughout the project lifecycle, from plan development to construction observation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Preparing detailed drawings and design layouts using CADD software based on sketches, redlines, surveys, and design criteria
  • Supporting project managers and engineers with plan development, specifications, and construction documentation
  • Calculating dimensions, quantities, profiles, and material takeoffs using computer programs and standard tools
  • Applying basic civil engineering design principles and construction methods in both office and field settings
  • Performing CADD work for reports, proposals, and project presentations
  • Assisting with construction observation, surveying, and materials testing
  • Serving as a resident project representative during construction projects as assigned
  • Communicating with contractors, project managers, and supervisors regarding construction progress and issues
  • Documenting field activities, quantities, and progress using electronic record systems
  • Participating in project meetings, client meetings, and internal team meetings
  • Following established CADD standards, safety policies, and ethical guidelines
  • Traveling as required, including overnight stays and seasonal overtime during construction periods
  • Performing other related duties as assigned
Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Willingness to work both in an office environment and outdoors during construction season
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one
  • Ability to travel and work out of town as needed
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, and working scheduled hours
Preferred
  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology or a technical degree in drafting, or equivalent applicable experience
  • Two to five years of related engineering technician or CADD experience
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bentley Open Roads Designer, and Micro Station Connect
  • Exposure to additional CADD or mapping software such as Sketch Up or GIS platforms
  • Experience supporting transportation, municipal, or water and wastewater infrastructure projects
  • Prior construction observation or resident project representative experience
