Position Purpose Under the direction of the Principal, the Explorer Academy Dean of Students serves as an instructional leader in the planning, coordination, and administration of school activities and programs, including curriculum, instruction, assessment, environment, student conduct and attendance, and the supervision and evaluation of assigned personnel. Provides staff with accurate and timely processes and procedures as mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities in Special Education Act (IDEA).
Acts as Local Education Representative (LEA) at IDEA procedural meetings, as needed.
Responsibilities
1. Instructional Leadership:
Assists the Principal in providing instructional leadership to the school. Performs a variety of administrative duties to assist the Principal in managing the school; assumes the duties of the Principal in the absence of the Principal and as assigned.
* Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school and fosters positive interpersonal relations among students and staff.
* Supervises and evaluates the performance of designated certificated and/or classified personnel; assigns duties to faculty and staff as appropriate to meet school objectives; assists with the recruiting, interviewing, and selection of new faculty and staff.
* Provides direction to a variety of faculty, staff, and student programs and services; participates in formal and informal classroom visits and observations; provides recommendations and suggestions for improvement as appropriate.
* Ensures process and procedures of IDEA such as implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and compliance monitoring.
* Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of academic intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.
* Establishes collaborative working relationships with building principals and district teams to ensure coordinated planning and smooth transitions for students to and from Level D settings.
2. Student Management:
Develops appropriate procedures for the discipline, attendance, health, and safety of the children assigned to the school.
* Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; leads and models student crisis responses; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints.
* Assume responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board Policies and Regulations by the school's staff and students.
* Serves as alternative LEA for Individual Educational Plans and 504s, and participates as needed in IEP, 504 or MTSS meetings.
* Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.
* Assists in the implementation of restorative practices with all school staff, as well as facilitates restorative conferencing and mediation when conflict/harm occurs between students, staff, staff and students, and families and staff.
* Assists in the development and implementation of re-entry of students returning from disciplinary events and works with PBTs to create student behavior intervention plans.
* Collects data to assist in improving programming and outcomes for students.
* Leads the transportation coordination for students including addressing bus incident reports, student conflicts, route adjustments and staffing needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Carries out supervisory responsibilities given to him/her by the principal in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees and students; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
* Supervises students on campus before, during, and after school; monitors students during lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines.
* Conduct fire, other emergency drills and required safety trainings in accordance with state and local regulations.
* Assists in ensuring the effective implementation of the district-adopted curriculum and Individualized Education Plans (IEP).
* Assists in supervision of school sponsored events.
* Works closely with office staff and admin to monitor student health plans and administer student medication.
